SPECIAL EVENTS THIS WEEK
****************************
Bettye LaVette
NAC Babs Asper Theatre, 1 Elgin Street
Saturday, May 26 @ 7:30 pm; tickets from $49.50

Bettye LaVette began her career in 1962, at the age of 16, in Detroit, Michigan. She recorded for numerous major labels, including Atco, Epic, and Motown, over the course of the 1960s through the 1980s. In the 2000s she had a career resurgence and recorded multiple CDs, received a prestigious Pioneer Award by The Rhythm & Blues Foundation, a Blues Music Awards for Best Contemporary Female Blues Singer and Best Soul Blues Female Artist and was nominated for 3 GRAMMYs.

At 72 years old, she is still performing with the ferocity of a woman half her age. She is one of very few of her contemporaries who were recording during the birth of soul music in the 60s and is still creating vital recordings today. Now, in her 55th year in show business, she has recorded an album of all Bob Dylan songs, “Things Have Changed.” She will be performing the album in its entirety, along with other songs from throughout her career.

Paul DesLauriers Band
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Saturday, May 26

The Paul DesLauriers Band is made up of guitarist and singer Paul DesLauriers and the rhythm section of Greg Morency on bass and Sam Harrisson on drums. Having worked together on various projects for nearly 20 years, the band has become bound by friendship and an unshakable mutual respect. Based on this history and an uncanny musical chemistry, in 2013 they decided to focus all their energy and talents to develop their distinctive power trio.

These Montreal-based, Canadian Blues veterans blend rock with straight-ahead blues in a way that echoes the vibe of the great power trios from the ‘60s and ‘70s, yet they take the music to another level via modern stylings and an attack that’s free of clichés. The aural texture of their music changes on a dime from guitar-driven pyrotechnic blazing to a much milder blues boogie with seamless ease. It's all wondrously peppered with pleasing funky bass lines and a swamp-blues backbeat.

The Ria Reece Band
Atomic Rooster, 303 Bank Street
Sunday, May 27; 6-9 pm

The Ria Reece Band is old school Rhythm & Blues. Powerful and soulful, Ria Reece's haunting vocals take center stage. A great live act, this Montreal band's energy and passion is felt consistently throughout every performance.

Rick Fines & Suzie Vinnick In Concert
Best Western Convention Centre, Cobourg ON
Saturday, June 9; 8-10:30 pm

RICK FINES: Steeped in roots music, Rick Fines crafts a unique blend of warm-hearted blues, juke joint folk, and dockside soul that both embraces and defies the genres that influence him. As a veteran of the North American blues and folk circuits, he engages audiences with captivating songs, diverse guitar styling and his signature vocal growl. Rick’s storied career has seen him working in stellar collaboration and as a successful solo act. First gaining attention as part of the legendary Jackson Delta, he’s since released four solo albums, another with his own Rick Fines trio, and a critically acclaimed disc with fellow troubadour, Suzie Vinnick. Along the way he has racked up both awards and accolades. His 15-year stint with Jackson Delta received both Juno and Handy award nominations. His partnership with Suzie garnered a Maple Blues Songwriter of the Year Award. On his own, he’s pulled in two more Maple Blues Awards (for Solo Act of the Year), as well as an astonishing eight other nominations. While his songwriting chops won him a 2003 International Songwriting Competition, he’s equally proficient on guitar – having played for legendary blues piano player Pinetop Perkins, songstress Colleen Peterson, folk icon Penny Lang, and many others.

SUZIE VINNICK: A Saskatoon native transplanted to the Niagara Region of Ontario, Suzie Vinnick is the proud owner of a gorgeous voice, prodigious guitar and bass chops, and an engagingly candid performance style. Her career has seen triumph after triumph. Among her most recent successes: being nominated for a 2016 MapleBlues Award for Female Vocalist of the Year; achieving finalist status in the Solo/Duo Category at the 2013 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN; the 2012 CBC Saturday Night Blues Great Canadian Blues Award and the 2012 Sirius XM Canada Blues Artist of the Year. John Primer
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Friday, June 15; 8-11:30 pm

John Primer has undisputedly helped build the sound and style of Chicago blues as we know it today. The echos of tradition bellowing from the birthplaces he played such as: Maxwell Street, Theresa's, Checkerboard and Rosa's Lounges, pulse from every chord in his fingers today. John Primer is a Chicago Blues Living Legend.

John has played with such blues originators as: Sammy Lawhorn, Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, Smokey Smothers, Lonnie Brooks, Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters and Magic Slim before venturing out on his own in 1995. Since that time, he’s released or been recorded on over a dozen albums and toured extensively all over the world. A master storyteller and songwriter, his catalog of songs is endless. Some of the awards attached to him include: 2 Grammy nominations and 2 Living Legend honors as well as a Blues Music Award for Best Traditional Blues Artist from the National Blues Foundation and many more.

The depth of history and tradition that runs in John's blood from decades of master blues classes he took from all the Blues Godfathers builds his music catalog and unique style. John Primer is still at the top of his game. With his strong traditionalist blues phrasing, seasoned rhythm and blues vocals and lightning-fast slide guitar techniques, few artists can match him and none have his vast, real deal, blues history. There are very few fans, critics or musicians who will deny the fact that John Primer is the real deal.

Ry Cooder & His Band
Centrepointe Theatre, 101 Centrepointe Drive
Wednesday, June 27 @ 8 pm; tickets $91.50-$106.50

Ry Cooder is an American musician, songwriter, film score composer, and record producer. He is a multi-instrumentalist but is best known for his slide guitar-work, his interest in roots music from the United States, and his collaborations with traditional musicians from many countries.

Cooder's solo work draws upon many genres. Few musical artists of the past half century have introduced us to so many great songs; from so many rich musical traditions as has Ry Cooder. Whether they are choice nuggets from the early American blues catalogue, or gems from the birthing years of Rock & Roll or Rhythm & Blues; or Tex-Mex classics, African Blues or pre-Castro Cuban Music (Buena Vista Social Club), Ry Cooder has provided us with the most heartfelt and virtuosic of performances.

While many got to see Ry Cooder perform in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, it has been a rare occurrence to see him since. His 1981 shows at U of T’s Convocation Hall were voted “the best concerts of the year” by all three Toronto newspapers, the Star, the Globe & Mail and the Toronto Sun. This is the only time all three papers would agree on their choice.

Cooder performed at Centrepointe Theatres in 2016 with Ricky Skaggs and Sharon White, with two sold-out shows but this will be the first time he brings us an evening of essential Ry Cooder music to Ottawa. On June 27th, Ry Cooder and his Band play Centrepointe Theatres to celebrate much of his greatest musical work plus songs from his much-anticipated new recording “The Prodigal Son”, to be released in early May of this year.

In 2002, The Sidemen also won three Maple Blues Awards, including Album of the Year, and Songwriter of the Year. Reddick was also the 2008 Maple Blues Award winner as Songwriter of the Year. In 2016 Gains' album closing song "Leave It On The Line" won the Cobalt Prize at the Maple Blues Awards. This national prize is designed to highlight innovation and creativity in songwriting. Re-broadcast Saturday 10 am – noon & Sunday 2-4 pm (all times EST)
It’s all about the Blues, Jazz and its derivatives from around the globe and just around the corner. Songs rarely heard, from the very first recordings all the way to indie artists who consciously push the envelope to the next generation sounds of the genre; some older releases will be spun - just because the album in old, doesn't mean it's forgotten, thus the "On The Side" part of the show's title.
