Ottawa Blues This Week - 8 December 2014

******************************
#ottmusik – CALL TO MUSICIANS!
******************************
#ottmusik is an initiative that brings local music to the City of Ottawa's phone system. The goal is to answer calls as quickly as possible, but when a caller has to wait or in the event of a transfer, we want them to hear your music!
The music currently played on the City’s phone systems will be replaced with your music; new music created by local talent. We’re also going to feature your music on ottawa.ca/ottmusiken, so if a caller likes what they hear, they can connect with you directly.
With #ottmusik the City of Ottawa is furthering its commitment to providing new opportunities to Ottawa’s cultural community, while offering citizens an enhanced and unique experience when calling the City.  The City wants to help musicians reach a broader audience, and show our appreciation of what you do for our city.
Deadline:  Monday January 12, 2015 at 11:59pm

SPECIAL EVENTS THIS WEEK
******************************
Virée Blues Boréale final show of the 20th edition
Guy Belanger and Adam Karch
Bar Le Petit Chicago, 50 Promenade du Portage, Gatineau
Wednesday, December 10 @ 8 pm; tickets $20
(OBS member discount $5 off ticket price with OBS card)

One of our next guests, well known for his award-winning movie musical soundtracks and as Mr Bob Walsh’s sideman, took quite a “Blues Turn”! He will be launching his new CD, “Blues Turn”, recorded in Montreal, in Toronto and in the Windy City, Chicago with, among others, Alec Fraser, Steve Strongman, Kenny ‘Beedy Eyes’ Smith, Felton Crews  and, to round-up the band, Studebaker John and with Jimmy Johnson! But, experts beware! Put aside what you know about Guy Belanger. Sure, you will at anytime recognize the unique harmonica playing which earned him recognition, but ... a delightful surprise awaits you! The V2.0 Guy Belanger is here; blues with shades of rural music, urban music, gospel, and country rock! Over the years, he’s convinced us that his harmonica and his charisma were his major assets. You will be thunderstruck, like we were, to discover the pure Blues voice of Guy Belanger. This launch of the all new Guy Belanger CD, “Blues Turn” will take place with another great virtuoso, of the guitar this time, Adam Karch. His latest release, “Bluesprints” from last May sounds much closer to his roots as he explores older repertoires in a modern style. In “Bluesprints”, Adam Karch brilliantly takes apart some of the major works from his musical world, without pretension and moving aside from modern overproduction, on the contrary. Simply classics without artifice, brought back to their most important basics, from Lou Reed to Leadbelly without leaving aside Springsteen and even the Bee Gees!

The launch of Guy Belanger’s latest opus together with Adam Karch and the Montreal band that recorded “Blues Turn” – Andre Lachance on guitar, Marc-Andre Drouin on bass and Michel Roy on drums – will bring to a close with panache, this 20th edition of Virée Blues Boréale.

AREA HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK
******************************
Terry Gillespie and Lyndell Montgomery
The Branch Restaurant, 15 Clothier St. East, Kemptville ON
Friday, December 12; $10

Terry Gillespie has been called a musical Shaman, Canada's King of Roots Music and Mr. Groove for good reason - his live performances are fascinating, entertaining and captivating in a way that allows the audience to pay attention and not be distracted from the music by egotistical showmanship and maniacal guitar playing. He is both charismatic and soulful. His guitar is tasteful, his vocals beautifully phrased and he is backed by an energy of sound that pulls people off their chairs and onto the dance floor. Those in attendance at Terry Gillespie shows are part of the show, with each audience member an integral part of the band; they too become one with the music.

FATHEAD’s JOHN MAYS NEEDS HELP
******************************
From Al Lerman:
We are sad and concerned to report that our friend and lead singer John Mays has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The one bit of good news about this is that it is a very slow-growing tumour that has not spread, and can be treated with a 80-95% success rate. Surgery is confirmed for January 28, 2015. John and all concerned are optimistic that he will get through this rough patch. Meanwhile, he has been unable to work, and he receives no sick pay benefits nor health insurance. John will be laid up for a few months at least, and will need money for rent, food and bills. Your contribution big or small is greatly appreciated. We look forward to John getting better and rejoining us soon!
Donations can be made via credit card or Paypal via our web: http://fathead.biz/help-john-mays (dropdown menu under our "HOME" page). We all appreciate your support.

THE IBC BOOK!
******************************
Blues on Beale Street: Memoirs of the International Blues Challenge is a photo book accompanied by a series of personal experiences, short stories, song lyrics and quotes collected from a vast variety of IBC attendees.

Photographer Jenn Ocken was inspired through eleven years of returning and documenting the International Blues Challenge to create a photo book. Together with writer Greg ‘Slim Lively’ Johnson, she reached out to hundreds of IBC attendees, including but not limited to band members, judges, producers, winners, and fans, and collected their own personal IBC stories to use as a way to archive the happenings at the largest gathering of blues bands in the world. The result – a photo book filled with emotionally rich images and personal experiences that show just how unique this event really is to the blues genre and the blues community.

20% of the book’s pre-order sales will be donated to the Blues Foundation’s Generation Blues fund! The crowdfunding initiative has closed, but you can still order the book: http://documentingblues.com/jenn-ocken#!/page/177379/ibc

THE COBALT PRIZE for
CONTEMPORARY BLUES COMPOSITION
******************************
The Toronto Blues Society and Paul Reddick are proud to announce the creation of The Cobalt Prize, a new Contemporary Blues Composition Award. The intention behind the Cobalt Prize is to promote blues music through exploration of its form. The winning composition will be judged on its ability to creatively utilize blues traditions within the broad contemporary musical landscape. A cash prize of $1000 will be presented to the winner at the upcoming Maple Blues Awards on January 19, 2015.

Particular attention will be paid to aspects of instrumentation, melodic invention, song structure, lyrics, and production possibilities. The successful song will refresh and enrich blues as an art form. “I want to encourage songwriters to create new and relevant blues-based songs that can refresh and redefine the blues form while attracting new fans to the genre”, says Reddick. The Cobalt Prize submissions are now open to Canadian composers.

Supporting their new album “Blues Central”, this five-piece band, led by singer/guitarist Mack Orr, has enough grit, sweat, and passion to get any crowd on its feet to boogie. Characterized as the best band around for cuttin' loose on a Saturday night, their raw approach is considered one of the most authentic urban blues bands since the 1970s.

Mack developed his talents sitting in with the Fieldstones at Green's Lounge, one of the most popular juke joints in Memphis, TN.  Over the last 15 years he has brought his deep, soulful sound to the world and shared the stage with other notable musicians, including admirers Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood. Teaming up with brothers Harold and James Bonner, drummer William Faulkner, and keyboardist Charlie Wood, Daddy Mack has created a mix of original music with classic tunes that is a testimony to the down-home traditional blues sound.
