Ottawa Blues This Week - 15 July 2014

Conor Gains Band
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Friday, July 18 @ 10 pm

The 20 year old Cambridge, Ontario resident, who earned a 2013 Maple Blues Awards nomination in the Best New Artist category, recently emerged from Kitchener’s Sound Distillery Recording Studio after months of late nights, elated. Now he is eager to share the music with blues/rock fans across the country.

Special guests on the CD include Jerome Godboo (2014 International Blues Challenge Harmonica player winner), The 24th Street Wailers and, on the keys, Waterloo region native Matt Weidinger. The CD will be released July 8. All eleven tracks are Conor Gains originals with “An Old Song” being a joint Mack Jordan/Conor Gains composition.

Following his win at the Toronto Blues Society’s New Talent Search, July 5, he hits the road with his band for an Eastern Canada tour. The Conor Gains Band lineup for the Eastern Canadian dates includes Mack Jordan (guitar, vocals), Aaron Hernandez (drums) and Mikey Vukovich (bass).

JazzWorks Sunday Jam
Carleton Tavern, 223 Armstrong Street
First Sunday of the month, 2-5 pm; cover $5; free admission for students

JazzWorks has started a second monthly jam series. Besides the current evening jam on the third Thursday of each month, it also runs an afternoon jam on the first Sunday of the month. Charley Gordon writes: "One of the hopes is that this afternoon jam session will be attractive to students who, for some reason, generally avoid taverns on weekday nights. Depending on attendance and other factors, we might do some experimenting with format in this new jam."

Host Band: The Kavchak/Kubelka/Menard Trio
     Michael Kavchak - bass
     Anthony Kubelka - piano
     Daniel Menard - drums
These students all are members of the Ottawa Junior Jazz Band, and of the Bells Corners Academy Jazz Camp Band where they work with Yves Laroche.

Whether you're a jazz lover, or jazz instrumentalist or vocalist at any level, you are most welcome to join the fun with the improvised blend of the familiar and unexpected.  Musicians of intermediate level and up are encouraged to participate in the jam.  If you will be calling a tune, you must bring at least three copies of lead sheets in your concert C key for other musicians, and charts for Bb and Eb instruments would be appreciated by horn players.

The jam sessions are coordinated by Alf Warnock at: alf.warnock@gmail.com . Please contact Alf if you would like to volunteer as MC or assist with breakdown/setup for specific upcoming jam sessions in the 2013-2014 season, or if you would like more information about the jam.

Drew and his all-star band will be hosting a CD release party at Irene’s on Wednesday, July 30 at 8 pm, and they’ll be playing songs from the new album along with some favourites from past releases.
An Evening With Maria Hawkins/Poetic Justice
in support of ‘Stop the Bullying’
RCAF Hall, Smiths Falls ON
Friday, August 1; tickets $15 or 2 for $25
Steve Hill
Neat Coffee Shop, Burnstown ON
Thursday, August 7 @ 8 pm; tickets $25

In 2012, Hill released “Solo Recordings Volume 1″, probably his rawest album to date, and it was chosen “Best Self-Produced CD” at the International Blues Challenge.  He followed up with “Solo Recordings Volume 1.5” and, just this spring, “Solo Recordings, Volume 2”. “The singer-songwriter-composer explores new sounds, all the while paying homage to his blues roots. This album infuses the blues with a good dose of rock, folk and country. In addition to singing and playing the harmonica and guitar, Steve performs standing up, his feet playing bass drum, snare drum, hi-hats and any other percussion he can reach. “Solo Recordings Volume 2” includes original songs, as well as covers of two blues classics from the 1950s.”
Ray Bonneville
Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street
Wednesday, August 13 @ 8 pm

“On his 4th Red House Records album, “Easy Gone”, Ray Bonneville’s … guitar work shimmers like stars emerging at dusk. His voice carries the rich, natural timbre of time, though underneath that pearl-like smoothness, one hears its gritty core. His harmonica rhythms add even more texture to his sound. …. “The whole songwriting thing, to me, is mysterious, and I want to keep it that way,” Bonneville says. Ultimately, what matters is knowing how to translate the mystery into music and that, he understands perfectly.”
Jordan John in Concert
Black Sheep Inn, Wakefield QC
Friday, August 15 @ 8:30 pm

“To say that vocal sensation Jordan John is a more powerful and polished lead vocalist and multi-instrumentalist than many players twice his age would tell just a fraction of the story. He has already compiled a longer list of credits, and displays more assuredness and maturity, than many performers twice his age. Adept on drums, keyboards, guitar and bass, he distills the blues, soul and rhythm & blues into a sound that is both solidly traditional and a bold departure from the electronically generated music that has saturated the pop charts in recent years. ….
Delivering a refined essence of traditional based Blues, Soul & Rhythm ‘n’ Blues, this musical dynamo adds a breath of fresh air to the contemporary music landscape!”
