SPECIAL EVENTS THIS WEEK
************************************
The Mojo Stars
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Thursday, March 13

Formed in 2006, The Mojo Stars have wasted no time in establishing themselves as a force to be reckoned with. With deep roots in the blues and soul combined with a rock driven edge, this multitalented band has been collecting a large following starting from their debut performance at one of the closing nights of Vancouver's 2006 Jazz Festival to their summer outdoor festival shows of 2013.

Started by singer and front man extraordinaire Randy Clarke and ace guitarist Mark Rankin, and later including local heavyweights, drummer Shawn Soucy and bassist Rob Marr, the band’s first year saw them playing at local clubs, pubs, casinos and private events. In 2009, they recorded their first CD, “Devil’s Advocate”, a collection of ten original songs penned by Clarke and Rankin. The CD received massive airplay being featured on blues programs in Canada, the US and Europe, including being the new spotlight artist on Canadian Brent Zwicker's show, ‘At The Crossroads’. The disc was also in regular rotation on the US's Tony Steidler Dennison's podcast, ‘The Roadhouse’, which has a listenership of over 10,000. The CD has also received the highest rating possible from John Vermilyea's famed blues website, Blues Underground Network. Locally, the band had four songs featured in the Vancouver Province’s Playlist section in 2009/2010, which with an online/print weekly readership of 920,000, enabled them to reach an even greater audience.

The end of 2010 saw group co-founder Randy Clarke forced to confront an American marijuana charge and spend two years in a US jail. Upon his return, the band was invigorated, adding new members, B3 player Kenny Boychuck (long time Jerry Doucette collaborator) and sax man JT Platt (So Tight band) to the lineup. Playing their return gig at the newly-opened Columbia in New Westminster, The Mojo Stars sold out the 300-seat-room and treated both old and new fans to freshly written material.

The Mojo Stars are once again back on track and ready to share their tunes with fans of good music, wherever they may be.

Ottawa ON – Saturday, March 15
Navan ON – Monday, March 17

Fuelled by emotion and a desire for delivering powerful music, Charlie A’Court is undoubtedly one of Canada’s new generation of fresh singer/songwriters, attracting fans internationally with gutsy vocals and his colourful yet solid guitar playing.
To close out 2013, Galaxie Radio released their list of the top 50, most played albums of the year on Galaxie channel, The Blues (Canada). Charlie A’Court’s “Triumph & Disaster”, which garnered him two 2013 East Coast Music Awards, ranks number 18 on the list including a mix of other Canadian and international artists.
Charlie was invited to perform at the Maple Blues Awards ceremony in Toronto, January 20 and, thanks to Kimberly Mallett, here’s a video of that performance. (Check out his back-up singers!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJ7ZwnGOUrs

Paul Deslauriers CD Release
                with special guest Steve Marriner
Rainbow Bistro, 76 Murray Street
Saturday, March 15 @ 10 pm

A virtuoso on both electric and acoustic guitars, Paul Deslauriers is part of Canada’s guitar elite and is considered one of Quebec’s overall best guitarists; but it doesn’t stop there, he’s also a powerful and expressive singer. Winner of the Lys Blues Award for Best Artistic Performance in 2011, Album of the Year in 2008 (“En Duo”), and Best Musical Performance in 2005, he was also nominated at the Maple Blues Awards in 2008 for Acoustic Act of the Year along with Dawn Tyler Watson for their album "En Duo". In 2010 Deslauriers was musical director, producer, and performer on the “Nos Stars Chantent Le Blues à Montréal” CD for L’équipe Spectra and the Montreal International Jazz Festival. Paul's 2006 solo release “Ripping Into Red” garnered rave reviews in the April 2007 issue of Guitar Player Magazine. Editor in Chief Michael Molenda had this to say about him: "Deslauriers really knows how to grab your ears from note one... He's also a gifted songwriter and vocalist, and his solos, especially the slide lines, are short, but thrilling!"

Since 1997 he has fronted the Paul Deslauriers Band, and proudly showing his rock colors and his true to the blues roots. With over two decades of experience in the music industry (began his career in his early teens!), seven albums under his belt, and a list of fans that extends into Europe and the US, this guitarist/singer/songwriter/producer has truly mastered his art!

Triple Bill:
Matt Andersen (New Brunswick), Steve Hill (Montreal) & Kim Churchill (Australia)
Museum of Civilization, Gatineau QC
Saturday, March 15; tickets $40, 60+ $37, students $35

Matt Andersen’s narrative-driven writing cuts through the soul, blending blues and folk, encompassed in total honesty. He takes listeners on a ride with his diverse musical styles, skilled guitar work and over-the-top showmanship. Matt’s intimate, high-energy performances have captivated audiences across the world, from Canada, to the US, to Australia and the UK, from small clubs to festivals. He’s touring in support of his new CD, “Weightless”.

Steve Hill’s recent emphasis has been on his solo show, and in 2012, he released “Solo Recordings Volume 1. Probably his rawest album ever, it features Hill not only on guitar and vocals, but also on bass drum, hi-hat, shakers and whatever he can do with his feet at the same time that he plays guitar and sings! Recorded live in the studio (with NO overdubs), it’s the sound of a man that has lived through a lot. 15 years after his first album, you can hear and feel a maturity that can only exist out of experience. Submitted by the Montreal Blues Society, “Solo Recordings Volume 1” was chosen at the Best Self-Produced CD at the 2013 International Blues Challenge in Memphis TN. “Solo Recordings Volume 1.5” followed and “Solo Recordings Volume 2” is in the works.

It's the soothing sound of Kim Churchill who plays a guitar with the busiest of fingers and the rhythm of a master, and who sings lyrics too enigmatic to believe they came from someone so young. He's a true blue Aussie; a surfer with a connection to the sea that spills out in his performances, even when he's a long, long way from the beach. And he's a reminder to us all that choosing what's in your heart is better than choosing what's in your head.

Kim doesn't just show up and play his music. He takes the time to explain his songs, he takes the time to thank the crowd and he pauses to inhale the manifestation of his dream. In an age full of self-centered performers who consider fanfare a right and not a privilege, Kim is a breath of fresh air. Will he grow cold from the gig and start to play his songs just for the money? Who knows, but the greatest reason for hope that Kim won't follow a long list of burnt out performers is his connection to the sea, which he can use like an ace up the sleeve. It's that union with nature that will ground him, it's a bond that may protect him from the vultures, prevent him from following and instead give him the confidence to lead.

AREA HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK
************************************
The 19th edition of Virée Blues Boréale presents
The Carson Downey Band
Le Petit Chicago, 50 Promenade du Portage, Gatineau QC
Wednesday, March 12 @ 8 pm; $15

The Carson Downey Band – explosive energy, spectacular Hendrix or Steve Ray style solos, destroyed guitars that can’t live past the show, an expert mix of Southern Soul, Texas Blues and Rock ‘n’ Roll!
From North Preston, a small Nova-Scotia community of 3,000, some 10 Km North-East of Halifax, the members of the Carson Downey Band are proud descendants of the slaves and free immigrants who came to the Maritimes with other Loyalists, at the end of 18th century, during the American Revolution.   In the `60s, they lived as large families in small houses with up to eleven occupants, heated with a wood stove, an oil-fired boiler and lighted by oil lamps, in a money poor but soul rich community, where music, Gospel Choirs among others, brought them all tightly together and helped keep their heads up in spite of the pervasive racism.
After some twenty years in the music industry, they opted out of their title as ‘Atlantic Canada’s best kept secret’ and launched their first album “All The Way” in 2000.   The buzz hit the streets and led to many rave reviews and awards including The Fender East Coast Guitarist Of The Year, a nomination for Best New Artist at the Maple Blues Awards, the Drummer Of The Year title and the Dutch Mason Award for exceptional contributions to the Preservation of Blues Music in Atlantic Canada.
Then, the band left on coast to coast tours, opening for Buddy Guy in Toronto, on "Open-Mike with Mike Bullard" and "Canada AM", on extensive tours of Germany, Greenland, Asia and the United States. After "Burnin' Up Live", the band will probably get back to the studio for another album. If integrity, commitment and talent guarantee lasting success, then The Carson Downey Band is here to stay!
Expect a high voltage performance – The Carson Downey Band are Carson Downey, vocals and guitar, Murray Downey on drums and Marlowe Smith on bass

Johnny Winter and Jimmy Bowskill Double Bill
Uxbridge Music Hall
Friday, March 21
and
Lindsay Academy Theatre
Saturday, March 22

A dynamite double bill – Johnny Winter and Jimmy Bowskill.

New Johnny Winter iPad App on iTunes! Learn all about the life and music of Johnny Winter through an illustrated mini-book and audio clips of Johnny sharing thoughts and experiences. Then learn some of Winter’s blues licks, riffs, turnarounds, and solos played by the master himself.

Jimmy Bowskill has been impressing his musical elders for a full decade now. At age 11, he attracted the attention of late great bluesman Jeff Healey by busking outside his Toronto club. Healey and the local blues community quickly sensed Bowskill's passion and potential, helping him record his 2003 debut album, the fittingly named “Old Soul”. The following year, Jimmy's second album, “Soap Bars & Dog Ears”, was nominated for a Juno Award, making him the youngest ever Juno nominee. Since then, he has worked tirelessly on his craft. The fruits of those labours can now be heard on his 5th release, “Back Number”, one you definitely won't want to forget.

David Gogo in Concert
Black Sheep Inn, Wakefield QC
Sunday, March 23 @ 4 pm

Before writing and recording his latest album, “Come On Down”, Gogo took a pilgrimage along the Blues Trail starting in Memphis and traveling through Mississippi, Arkansas and Alabama. Highlights of his southern adventure included sitting in with local musicians at The Shack Up Inn, Ground Zero, and Red's in Clarksdale, Mississippi. He appeared as a guest on Sonny Payne's renowned King Biscuit Radio Hour, and toured the legendary Fame, Sun, Stax, and Willie Mitchell's Royal Studios. Gogo also traveled to towns mentioned in Robert Johnson songs, poured bourbon on Johnson's grave, and even went down to Rosedale with his rider by his side, as those famous ‘Crossroads’ lyrics proclaim.

Inspired by his journey through the birthplace of the blues, Gogo wrote six original tunes and combined them with six reinvented yet classic covers to create a new album that not only honours traditional blues but also gets you dancing with some good old gritty rock and roll.  Come On Down” takes you to a place where Robert Johnson meets the Rolling Stones and Fleetwood Mac meets Ray Charles. It's a wild ride that Gogo navigates with ease, ingenuity and style.

Ethan Russell: The Best Seat in the House
Shenkman Arts Centre, 245 Centrum Boulevard
Saturday, March 29 @ 8 pm; $36.25

Go on the road with The Rolling Stones, see Janis Joplin at The Royal Albert Hall, Jim Morrison in London’s Roundhouse, witness the taking of the “Who’s Next” cover, travel the road with Santana, see John Lennon falling in love, The Beatles filming “Let It Be,” The Stones touring “Exile on Main Street,” The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, and more.

No one else has had quite the same, remarkable journey as multi-Grammy nominated author and photographer Ethan Russell. In 1967 he was a young American with a Nikon camera living alone in a small London apartment, aspiring to become a writer. Just a few years later he was known as one of the foremost rock photographers in the world. He would go on to photograph The Who’s “Quadrophenia,” The Beatles’ last photo session, and many others including Jerry Lee Lewis, The Moody Blues, Eric Clapton and Cream, Traffic, Linda Ronstadt, Rickie Lee Jones, The Eagles, and more.

Ethan’s lifetime involvement with the singer-songwriter motivated his development of a new kind of short, music based film, the inspiration for what later became known as “music video.” He directed the last film of John Lennon and Yoko Ono in Central Park. He directed videos with Joni Mitchell, Rickie Lee Jones, Emmylou Harris, Paul Simon, Rosanne Cash, Hank Williams Jr. and more. “It was a quite a ride,” says Russell.

Ethan has written three books exploring these years but with the live show he now focuses on his “ride,” what it really was like to be there.

The Presentation:
Seventy minutes of Ethan Russell’s behind-the scenes stories with over 375 photographs and music.
 Q&A:
After the presentation, Ethan takes questions from the audience for thirty minutes or more.
 Finally: Meet Ethan Russell
Those that wish to remain even longer are able to meet with Ethan, look at (and purchase from) a selection of 30-40 matted, fine art prints available at special prices for the evening.

BLUES ON THE SMALL SCREEN
****************************************
‘Cities In Blue’ takes you to the heart of the blues on the scenic route, with stories and song. Blues is the DNA of 21st century music. Jazz, folk, rock and roll, hip hop - everything - spun out of the music that emerged across America following the end of the Civil War.

The blues was not one homogenous 12 bar stomp - it developed differently in different regions, flavoured with the soul and the sounds of the people who lived there. Cities In Blue is an 8-part television series that explores what the sounds are and how they developed in Chicago, Kansas City, Mississippi, Memphis, New Orleans, Texas, New York City and the Piedmont region.

Each episode has been written, filmed, directed & edited by talented hands right here in Canada, hosted by award-winning musician/broadcaster Danny Marks. Along with some of Canada’s most talented blues artists, songs and stories honouring each locale were filmed in Revolution Studio and Peter J Moore's incredible enclave.

Toronto guitarist, songwriter and media personality Danny Marks’ musical roots go back to the sixties as a founding member of Capitol Records' group, Edward Bear.  He is also a recipient of the Toronto Blues Society's Blues With a Feeling Award for lifetime achievement in music and broadcast.

"After two years of hard work and love, Cities in Blue brings you the past, present and future of the blues, in a fresh new way", says Marks. "I am excited about the program and proud to be a part of a great team".
