AREA HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK
****************************************
Peter Karp & Sue Foley
Music by the Bay Live at Annandale, 221 Church Street South, Ajax ON
Friday Oct 18, 2013 @ 9 pm; Advance Tickets $40

Sue Foley is considered to be one of the finest blues and roots artists working today. Born to a working class family, Sue spent her early childhood moving from Canadian town to town with her mother. At sixteen, she embarked on her professional career. By twenty-one, she was living in Austin TX and recording for the legendary blues label, Antone’s Records. Her first release, “Young Girl Blues”, quickly established her unique talents as a blues guitarist and songwriter. Throughout the ‘90s she took to the road with her paisley Telecaster and honed her craft, working and sharing the stage with such artists as BB King, Buddy Guy, Lucinda Williams and Tom Petty. After moving back to Canada, Sue won the prestigious Juno Award for her critically acclaimed CD “Love Coming Down” as well as seventeen Maple Blues Awards.

Gifted singer-songwriter, guitarist, pianist and American troubadour, Peter Karp, is a master songsmith with an art for spinning true-to-life emotions, humor, and candor. With an upbringing that was equal parts southern Alabama and the swamps of New Jersey, Karp’s music is fueled by the Yankee-Rebel connection. He first caught national attention with help from Rolling Stone guitarist Mick Taylor who recorded and toured with Karp on his first label release “The Turning Point”. Karp further established himself on the national scene as a critically acclaimed songwriter, and accomplished guitarist and pianist with the release of his Blind Pig debut entitled “Shadows and Cracks”. On the road across the U.S. and Canada, Karp repeatedly transfixes his live audiences. Critics compare his songwriting to John Hiatt and John Prine, with impressive guitar and slide licks infused by his love of Freddie King and Elmore James.

“…red-hot guitar fretwork and pristine vocals …. stomping keyboards and raspy voice; mesh like well-oiled gears …. the duo’s creative chemistry shimmers in every note…. ”

Muscle Shoals
Monday, October 14 @ 9:05 pm
Tuesday, October 15 @ 9:05 pm

A town of some 13,000 inhabitants in northern Alabama on the banks of the Tennessee River, Muscle Shoals is tiny in comparison to cities like Memphis, New Orleans and Nashville. Yet for the last half-century it has punched way above its weight in the annals of American music. It’s effectively the centre of southern country soul, thanks to its legendary recording studios, where such stars as Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Percy Sledge and Candi Staton made their names, and where in later years established stars like the Rolling Stones, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan and Rod Stewart arrived to infuse their music with the elusive ‘Muscle Shoals sound’.

ByTowne Cinema and CKCU are screening concert and documentary films every Monday (repeated Tuesdays on some weeks) for as long as interest continues.

5th Annual An Evening to Remember
Gala Dinner and Dance fundraiser for Alzheimer’s Research
Ottawa Convention Centre, 55 Colonel By Drive
Saturday, October 26; doors @ 5 pm, dinner @ 7 pm, dance 9 pm – 1 am; tickets $100

From Tom Rowe:
As some of you know, Sweet and the Back Beat has been involved with the "You and Me for Memories Gala" for the past four years. This is a fund raising event for Alzheimer's research. Our good friend Dave St. Jean is the Chairman and driving force behind this effort and I am forwarding the invitation below. This is a first class event, very well organized and dedicated to a worthy cause.  Please consider lending your support.

Hi, I am the Chairman of the You and Me for Memories Foundation, with a mandate to raise funds to support research into all aspects of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. I would like to invite you to our 5th annual An Evening to Remember Gala Dinner and Dance fundraiser for Alzheimer’s Research. All proceeds raised go directly to support Alzheimer’s Research at the University of Ottawa. Last year An Evening to Remember sold out.

As you know, Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging. It is devastating – and fatal – but not quick. It slowly steals memory; cognitive, verbal and physical abilities; and ultimately, life. By the time you’ve finished reading this email another person in Canada will have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. There is no cure and no prevention. Research is the key to a cure. With enough support, researchers could find that cure, or a treatment, within 5-7 years.

Come and join us, and to help rid the world of Alzheimer’s disease. Please circulate this email to others who may be interested in supporting this important fundraising endeavour.

Visit www.youandmeformemories.ca for more information on Alzheimer’s, the Gala, to purchase tickets, make donations and sponsorship opportunities. You may also call us at 613-836-0961, or email youandmeformemories@gmail.com.

Sincerely,
Dave St-Jean
Chairman

It led to them being awarded 3 Maple Blues Awards in January 2010, including being recognized as Songwriters Of The Year. ZZ Top
Canadian Tire Centre, Kanata ON
Monday, November 11; tickets $60.50 and up

ZZ Top lay undisputed claim to being the longest running major rock band with original personnel intact and in 2004 the Texas trio was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. With the release of each of their albums the band has explored new ground in terms of both their sonic approach and the material they’ve recorded. Evidence of that consistency and adaptability is found in “La Futura”, their first studio album in nine years, which was released in September of 2012. Produced by Rick Rubin and Gibbons, it reflects the solid blues inspiration that has powered the band since the very beginning with a contemporary approach that underscores the group’s inclination to experiment and explore new sonic vistas. The album includes ten new tracks including the widely lauded ‘I Gotsta Get Paid’ that has become both a video and in-concert sensation.

Bonnie Raitt
                with special guest Marc Cohn
NAC Southam Hall, 53 Elgin Street
Friday, November 15 @ 8 pm; tickets start at $82

The long awaited return of the legendary Bonnie Raitt to the stage of the National Arts Centre with a very special guest: Marc Cohn. Well into her International Tour for her Grammy Award Winning 19th album “Slipstream”, this will be Bonnie’s first Ottawa appearance in over 6 years. The album got its start by Bonnie’s initial collaborations with longtime admirer, producer Joe Henry. Though many songs were actually recorded at that time, 4 have been included on “Slipstream”, with the remainder to be released on later recordings. The balance of the album comes from subsequent sessions with her much-lauded touring band including George Marinelli (guitar), James ‘Hutch’ Hutchinson (bass), Ricky Fataar (drums) and longtime friend Mike Finnegan (keyboards). Expect to hear a number of the new songs from “Slipstream” featured, along with many favourite songs from Bonnie’s catalogue of recordings from the last 40 years.

Ray Bonneville
Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street
Wednesday, November 20 @ 8 pm; tickets $20

Many of those familiar with Red House recording artist Ray Bonneville know that he is a hard driving, blues influenced, song and groove man who often writes about people who live on the fringe of society. Ray’s vibe is loose and soulful. With a greasy guitar style, horn-like harmonica phrasing, smoky vocal style and pulsing foot percussion he immediately rivets audiences. His solo performance fills a concert hall with all the sound layering and drama of a full band.  The consummate, driven professional, Ray plays more than one hundred and fifty shows a year across the US, Canada and Europe.  He has a loyal, enthusiastic fan base wherever he goes.
