“Going back to the days of Ottawa’s criminally
unheralded ‘Heaven’s Radio’ Terry Gillespie has been a soulful groove master. On
‘BLUESOUL’ his eclectic musical taste has honed in on a distinctive
highbred body of intelligent material, resulting in his first, long awaited
‘all blues’ release. Terry says: ‘getting inside the groove is where
it’s at’. Like Mark Knopfler, JJ Cale or JB Lenior, he is a player whose
comfortable voice perfectly suits his economical deep guitar grooves. Nothing’s
wasted and nothing’s missing.”

The Secret Disco Revolution
Monday & Tuesday,
September 16-17 @ 9:10 pm
If
you are old enough to smile every time you hear a few notes from ‘Boogie Fever’
(and it is, for the record, impossible not to smile at that song, let alone
keep your feet still), The Secret Disco Revolution is the perfect way to
while away an hour and a half. It’s a documentary that jokingly presents the
rise and fall of disco music and culture in the late ’70s as a form of
counterculture protest – a kind of power flag seized and waved by gay, black
and female disco artists.
(excerpt
from a review by Moira Macdonald, The Seattle Times)
ByTowne Cinema and CKCU are screening concert and
documentary films every Monday (repeated Tuesdays on some weeks) for as long as
interest continues.

Music By The Bay Live presents
Up Close & Personal Blues Revue
221 Church Street South, Ajax ON
Friday, September 27; tickets $50

Music by the Bay Live Small Club BIG
SHOW Concert Series presents an intimate, up close and personal Blues Revue
featuring Juno & Maple Blues Award Winners.
All tickets includes Hors d’oeuvres
& Assorted Appetizers ● Reserved Seating ● Large Dance Floor ● Barrier-Free
Accessibility ● Free Parking
For the 5th Season launch,
an Intimate & Interactive Blues Revue with performances by Al Lerman
(solo), Jake Chisholm (trio) and the Gary Kendall Band.
Al Lerman (Solo)
Multi-instrumentalist Al
Lerman (harmonica, tenor saxophone, guitar and vocals) is the band leader
of the 2x Juno Award winning blues/roots outfit FATHEAD. He also
performs regularly as a solo acoustic artist playing guitar & rack
harmonica, and often works as a guest sideman with a myriad of top-notch bands,
touring internationally.
Jake Chisholm (Trio)
There is sincerity in Jake Chisholm’s
music that is immediately identifiable. Whether his compelling vocal, his
memorable guitar hooks, or his thoughtful lyrics ; he excels in all areas,
providing the listener with the feelings of both familiarity and being privy to
something cutting edge ; both at once. No fancy bells and whistles here, just a
deep and full sound that is a fresh take on blues and adding rock ‘n’ roll
elements. Inspired by classic blues, soul and rock n roll, Chisholm’s tasteful
yet intricate guitar work and song writing evokes vivid and shameless tales of
love, lust, and lessons learned.
Gary Kendall Band
Everyone knows Gary Kendall as oft-elected
Maple Blues’ Bassist of the Year, blues man about town and keeper of the bottom
end for Downchild. But Gary’s alter ego is found in his much beloved Gary
Kendall Band – a band in which each carefully selected player is equal and
accountable. Formed in 2005, Gary reached out to some of Toronto’s best
musicians to create a turn-on-a-dime squad of blues marauders to build a loyal
following for their own brand of music –and for doing exactly what they like to
on any given night – play the blues. The chemistry found between Gary
Kendall (bass/lead vocals/songwriter), Tyler Burgess (drums), Darran Poole
(guitar/vocals) and Wayne “Shakey” Dagenais (piano/organ/percussion/vocals) is
beyond formidable. This spirited foursome plays together relentlessly and has
so much fun at it, one’s never entirely sure what to expect – and that
live spontaneity is exactly what the blues has needed for a long time.
