Sister!”
choir is making a “joyful noise” for St. Joe’s Women’s Centre. Jody Benjamin
directs two choirs, one in Ottawa Centre and the other in Ottawa West, and they
are joining forces as we continue our tradition of giving back to our
community.
We
dedicate our annual fundraiser to helping our communities. We are also found throughout the year
performing at other fundraisers and at seniors’ homes. Our performances are joyful occasions and our
audiences respond with delight to our enthusiasm and energy.
There
are 15 Chapters of Shout Sister! Choir in Ontario now. Our Ottawa Sisters were
featured in the April issue
of Walrus Magazine and this coming November they will be opening for the Nylons
at the Shenkman Arts Centre. The word is out –
Shout Sister rocks!
St.
Joe’s Women’s Centre is a day program that is dedicated to the needs of women,
in a supportive and safe environment. Social and educational programs are
offered to promote empowerment, autonomy, and dignity in a non-judgmental
atmosphere. St. Joe’s Women’s Centre was founded in May 1984 to
provide daytime shelter for Ottawa’s homeless women. Today, St. Joe’s Women’s
Centre continues to play a significant role in the lives of many women and
their children. A warm, safe, caring place to spend the day makes a real
difference in one’s life.

Award" at the Maple Blues Awards 2013, THE master of extreme harmonica
will be back at Virée Blues Boréale to present his very last show, the “Jim Zeller Circus”.
An original character, unusual, enfant terrible of the Blues, Jim Zeller, our own Jimmy Hendrix of the harmonica was born in Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts in the beautiful Canadian Laurentians in 1953. It’s been almost forty years since the beginning of his fantastic love affair with his harmonica, this special toy that he chose in his very early teens. At the end of the ‘70s, Jim Zeller joined a professional music group for the very first time, The Shaky Al Blues Band and toured with this group for a couple of years. During that same period of time, he was the accompanying harmonicist at the legendary Rising Sun Club for, among other Blues Legends: B.B.King, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, J.B.Hutto, Willie Dixon, James Cotton, Albert Collins and Frank Marino. This was when he met Alan Gerber and they became the so well-known Gerber-Zeller Duo, very popular in Canada and even more in New York.

bit of New Orleans, Irene Torres and the Sugar Devils is gaining a reputation
as a band to watch. They exploded onto the scene in 2011 and shortly after
winning the 2012 Toronto Blues Society award, they were nominated for a Sigy
Born award, were selected for a Toronto Independent Music Award and won the
"Road to Memphis" challenge to compete at the International Blues
Competition in Memphis Tenn.
Lead singer, sultry Peruvian born Irene Torres is
recognized as the singer for Sol Azul, Santerias & The Sugar Devils. Her
voice and lyrics can be heard on worldwide radio stations, in commercials,
television, and soundtracks. She is a quadruple threat with a background in
dancing, acting, broadcasting and martial arts. Her talents stretch beyond
lyrics and singing, when it's time to perform, she mesmerizes, drawing the
audience in.... they can't help but move!
The rest of the band includes experienced musicians
from all genres, including sugar coated Drew Austin, renowned drummer,
percussionist, and clinician who has worked with award winning artists

Honeyrunners have a knack for musical alchemy, melding soul-wrenching Motown
Rock with the shine of ‘90s Alt-radio and the storytelling folk of the ‘60s.
Their debut single, ‘Jet Set’, is featured on Bacardi's international
campaign for 'Champions Party 2013'. The newest HR tune, ‘My Garage (Bang Bang Bang)’, will
debut on Coca-Cola's "52 Songs of Happiness" campaign later this
year. In April, The Honeyrunners performed live on national television for CTV

Tav Falco - The master of a raw and shambolic fusion of
rockabilly, blues, and fractured noise, Tav Falco was, along with the Cramps,
one of the earliest purveyors of what would come to be known as psychobilly,
and he anticipated the fractured but hard-hitting blues wailing of the Gories
and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion by close to a decade.
Falco put together the first version of his band the
Panther Burns (named for a famous Tennessee plantation), a group whose
revolving membership included Alex Chilton and James Luther Dickinson in its
early incarnations. Falco then relocated to New York City, where he brought his
frenetic roots music to the Big Apple's then-thriving no wave scene, which led
to Falco's major-label release, “Blow Your Top”, a 1982 EP issued by Chris
Stein's (Blondie) Animal label. Throughout the 1980s and '90s, Falco began
dividing his time between Europe and the United States, and released a slow but
steady stream of recordings with shifting Panther Burns lineups while holding
down another career as an actor.
His latest CD Live In London At The 100 Club, was released in 2012.

Sam Korosi is a solo, multi-instrument
musician, currently studying Popular Music and residing in Liverpool England.
Sam's musical style is heavily influenced by Brit-pop, classic rock,
alternative and folk music; entertaining audiences with familiar and
influential hits ranging from Mumford and Sons to The Beatles. Sam is a
familiar face to the city as a street performer in the Byward Market and
musical act around Ottawa and Liverpool. An hour-long show filled with
different instruments and light-hearted musicality and lots of Beatles. "A

Fry is an accomplished singer/songwriter from Kingston, Ontario. A veteran of
the concert and festival circuit, she receives rave reviews for her live
performances. Georgette has been described as a “powerful and expressive
singer.” She returns to the stage with a Tribute to Etta James, accompanied
by an eight-piece band, three accomplished vocalists (Tabby Johnson, Mariko
Ohtake and Anna Sudac), and the Shout Sister! Choir providing the gospel
backups!
Georgette’s
concerts highlight the ease with which she bridges the gap between jazz and
blues. Long recognized as one Canada’s
best blues vocalists, Georgette was most recently named “2013 Singer of the
Year” by the Calgary Blues Music Association.
Etta
James' career spanned six decades, during which she had several top ten hits, a
dozen nominations and three Grammy Awards and a Grammy "Lifetime
Achievement" Award; in 2008, her first hit, "The Wallflower"
(aka "Dance With Me Henry") was also given the Grammy Hall of Fame
Award. Etta James passed away in January of 2012, leaving one helluva legacy.

Dr. John, or Mac
Rebennack as known to friends and family, is universally celebrated as the
living embodiment of the rich musical heritage exclusive to New Orleans. His
very colourful musical career began in the 1950s when he wrote and played
guitar on some of the greatest records to come out of the Crescent City,
including recordings by Professor Longhair, Art Neville, Joe Tex and Frankie
Ford.
A notorious gun incident forced the
artist to give up the guitar and concentrate on organ and piano. Further
trouble at home sent Dr. John west in the 1960s, where he continued to be in
demand as a session musician, playing on records by Sonny and Cher, Van Morrison,
Aretha Franklin and The Rolling Stones' infamous Exile On Main St. to name a
few.
During that time he also launched his
solo career, developing the charismatic persona of Dr. John, The Nite Tripper.
Adorned with voodoo charms and regalia, a legend was born with his breakthrough
1968 album “Gris-gris”, which established his unique blend of voodoo mysticism,
funk, rhythm & blues, psychedelic rock and Creole roots.
After
Hurricane Katrina and government bungles bashed New Orleans in
2005, Dr. John immediately stepped up to the plate with both generous
relief fund-raising concerts and recordings and angry public words of protest.
In 2008 he released “City That Care Forgot,” an album winning him a Grammy for
Best Contemporary Blues Album. In 2013, Dr. John won a Grammy for his latest release
"Locked Down", produced by one of the biggest bands on the planet,
The Black Keys.

For Bill Durst, 2013 has already shot through the
roof with the promise of exciting things ahead. In January, he showcased at the
Blues Summit in Toronto, then, in February, played the Mid-Winter Blues
Festival in Regina Saskatchewan, and in March played in Moose Jaw and at the Saskatoon
Blues Festival. On June 22 he’ll be at the Stratford Bluesfest and on July
12 the Bruce County Bluesfest in Kincardine. He’ll also be at the Dutch Mason
Bluesfest on August 10 opening for Guitar Shorty and will be touring in Western
Canada in November. His 2012 live CD is still receiving attention and he’s
already writing for the next CD.

are bands for which rock and roll is a lifestyle, and then there are bands for
which it is life. At an age when most boys are still dreaming of rock stardom,
the Weber Brothers were too busy working to care. Four sets a night, four
nights a week, the brothers perfected their hard-won sound in Maryland dive
bars they were often too young to frequent.
Inspired
by their intense love of Scorcese’s classic concert film “The Last Waltz,” Ryan
and Sam sent off a self-recorded demo tape to the legendary Ronnie Hawkins, the
elder statesman of rock whose former protégés (Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, et
al.) went on to reshape the music history as The Band. Duly impressed by the
pair's immense raw talent, Hawkins promptly invited them to audition for his
storied backing band, The Hawks. One quick decision and one long van ride
later, they arrived at Hawkins’ rural Ontario home, and after surviving the
intense musical apprenticeship of his fabled “Rock ‘n’ Roll Bootcamp,” they
were in: full-blooded Hawks.
Ten
years and six self-released albums later, the Webers have spread their wings,
shared the stage with icons like Garth Hudson, Levon Helm, Leon Russell, Derek
Trucks and Kris Kristofferson, and toured extensively throughout the US,
Canada, and Europe.
“Left
Right Left Right,” their seventh release, is nothing less than a rebirth of The
Weber Brothers sound. A double album of 26 original songs, it fuses the
stomping country rock learned at Hawkins’ knee with the brothers' own love of
pop music in all its splendor, from gorgeous “Pet Sounds”/ “White Album” vocal
harmonies to blacktop-burning 50’s rockabilly, full-throated Crazy Horse
anthems to classic corner group doo-wop. Tightly focused in execution yet epic
in scope, “Left Right Left Right” is the Weber Brothers at their finest.
Firebelly
is a modern Canadian blues outfit, formed in 2012, driven by a collective
passion to create fresh blues music, while respecting its rich & timeless
traditions. Lead singer & harp player, front man Mathieu Gagnon, is a
captivating storyteller, with the rare ability to make you live through the
song, with his sweet powerful voice, & electrifying harp playing. The
smooth & funky bass guitar of Dan Grewal, combine with the lively drums of
Mike McNeil and the poignant & fearlessly tasteful guitar playing of Fredy

Yukon Blonde gave an intimate preview show of their sophomore CD, Tiger
Talk, to about 130 fans in CBC Vancouver's Studio 40. Everything about the band
is high energy, and it seems that's something that attracts their fans, many of
whom are musicians themselves. Yukon Blonde fulfilled their geographic
imperative of looking manly, hairy, and distinctly northern Canadian. They
brought along impressive elk-motif wall hangings that were draped behind them
imparting a cozy, man-cave ambience to the proceedings. Not bad for four guys
originally from the comfortable resort town of Kelowna, BC.

Two very different singer-songwriters come together for the very first
time to collaborate and compose brand new songs for this sold out concert. Erin
Costelo and Stephen Fearing originally wanted to collaborate on writing three
new works but the partnership was so successful, they ended up with seven
original co-written works, including a song that commemorates the 100th
anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic.

Sloan is a band that needs no introduction to CBC Music listeners. They
got their start back in 1991 when Jay Ferguson, Chris Murphy, Patrick Pentland
and Andrew Scott formed Sloan in Halifax, Nova Scotia and released their first
EP. The EP was titled Peppermint and it contained the bands first break through
single, "Underwhelmed." Since then the band has released album after
album and pop hit after pop hit and every step of the way CBC was there with
them. So, when it came time to put together the line up for the inaugural
