John Carroll is a singer, songwriter, performer and recording artist who has explored music as his mode of expression for over 25 years. Influenced by musicians Rev. Gary Davis, Missippi John Hurt, Tom Waits, Fred McDowell, John Prine and Lyle Lovette, John’s mixture of country blues, folk, roots and rock n’ roll provide an intricate landscape for his mindfully crafted lyrics. His first two full length solo albums, “The True Confessions of an Infamous Liar,” (2003) and “Lost Radio” (2008) were well received and sold to audiences all over Canada, the U.S and parts of Europe.

Music By The Bay Live Small Club BIG SHOW Concert Series presents

MonkeyJunk ***SOLD OUT***

The Waterfront, 590 Liverpool Road, Pickering ON

Friday, January 30 @ 9 pm

Paving their own way in blues, MonkeyJunk is a cross between Muddy Waters, Lightnin’ Hopkins, swamp R&B and soul boogie that will keep your foot tappin’ and your body movin’.

At the 2010 Maple Blues Awards MonkeyJunk were nominated for 6 awards and took 5 including entertainers of the year, vocalist and guitarist. They beat out the likes of Colin Linden and Colin James to win Blues Band of the year at the Canadian Independent Music Awards.

Guitars, keys, drums, harp and vocals are their sound, no bass- but they say Hound Dog Taylor didn’t have a bass player, and Little Walter often didn’t use one either.

Upon being asked about his passion for his music, delta blues legend Son House said “I’m talkin’ ‘bout the blues, I ain’t talkin’ ‘bout monkey junk”. And thus was born the quirky name of the equally quirky contemporary blues band MonkeyJunk. Blending delta blues, soul boogie, and country with modern presentation, MonkeyJunk boasts an innovative and creative approach to the blues. Steve Marriner, Tony D, and Matt Sobb, play well off of each other, seamlessly creating an upbeat, catchy sound that has really started to be noticed on the blues scene in Europe and the States.

Canada Live, 7 pm week nights on CBC Radio 2

Monday, December 19
concert 1: Dala Christmas Special
- with guest host Amanda Putz

recorded at the National Arts Centre Studio in Ottawa
Meet us under the mistletoe for the exquisitely talented duo of Amanda Walther and Sheila Carabine of Dala. Darlings of the Canadian music scene, these JUNO nominees have released five albums and toured extensively across North America. This soulful folk-pop duo performed some Christmas music plus some of their favourite original songs, all with their trademark back-and-forth banter.

Wednesday, December 21
concert 1: A Very Foggy Christmas
- with guest host Nana Aba Duncan
recorded at Hugh's Room in Toronto
Believe it or not, Toronto boasts a bustling bluegrass scene of surprisingly young, dedicated and hot (in a virtuosic way) players. Leading the way for most of the last decade has been a smokin' five-piece known as The Foggy Hogtown Boys. In this concert they set the city's number one roots venue, Hugh's Room, ablaze with seasonal spirit - not to mention fiery pickin' and fiddlin'. Joining this holiday joyride are some very special guests: well-known Toronto roots artists Oh Susanna and Jenny Whiteley.

Friday, December 23
concert 1: A Not So Silent Night
, recorded at Le Theatre Saint-Denis in Montreal
It's remarkable what a mother will do to keep her kids close by, especially when she's trying to keep a beloved family tradition alive. Take for example Kate McGarrigle, who devised a scheme so powerful yet so simple that her entire far-flung clan gravitates back to Quebec for Christmas dinner each year. Children Rufus and Martha Wainwright are now in the middle of successful music careers and live far away from the village of St. Sauveur, their birth place and past home of generations of McGarrigles. Yet, since 2005, along with Kate's beloved sisters Anna and Jane and cousins Lily and Sylvan, a great Christmas tradition has been established which is presented here for Canada Live. The idea for the show was based on Kate and Anna's 2005 album, The McGarrigle Christmas Hour, and now has now been christened 'A Not So Silent Night' and has become both a Christmas celebration and a loving tribute to Kate McGarrigle, who sadly passed away last January. Kate would be pleased; not only was her scheme successful, but in tonight's version, 27 members of her family and friends got into the act! An impressive lineup that includes Quebecois stars Robert Charlebois, Monique Mercure and Chloe St-Marie. With a portion of the proceeds going to The Kate McGarrigle Cancer Fund, the spirit of Christmas is indeed alive!
