Kelly Joe Phelps & Corinne West

Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street

Friday, August 19

Traveling for years the same well-worn roads of the touring musician (crossing paths constantly, missing one another by a day here or a week there), it wasn’t until the end of 2009 that Corinne West and Kelly Joe Phelps found the opportunity to play music together. Performing alongside Corinne on a series of CD release shows for her most recent record “The Promise”, Kelly Joe discovered that he’d met a true musical partner, and she the same. The next thought was simultaneous and obvious – forge their respective solo careers into one as a duo.

The fundamental layer of Corinne and Kelly Joe’s new partnership is mutual admiration and respect both for the ideal of honest, inspired, poignant art, and each other’s own creativity and musical vision. They also share an undeniably ravenous passion for the acoustic guitar. From this foundation these two are creating beautiful, exceptional music. Intricate, dense and lush harmony vocals wrap themselves around layers of interlacing, weaving guitar parts. Alongside this rise lyrics rich in imagery and testament, held aloft by melodies soaring in tandem with two voices seemingly born to sing together. This new duo will delight and amaze fans already familiar with the work of either artist, and those discovering Corinne and Kelly Joe for the first time will marvel.

Corinne West, a fourth generation Californian and musician who performs upwards of 200 shows each year, has a voice that simply soars. Using her powerfully eloquent voice, coupled with beautifully-crafted songs - memorable both lyrically and melodically - she has fashioned a unique identity within American music’s acoustic/roots scene. Her latest record, “The Promise”, confirms West’s place among

the finest young singer-songwriters. Described as "elegant new sexy acoustic jazz-rock-folk", and "west coast acoustic soul music", this is a work of deep feeling and deep inspiration, roads traveled and

roads less traveled, songs insightful and resonant about matters of the heart, soul and existence. In concert, Corinne brings a special grace and fire to the stage. Her songwriting strength coupled with

magnetic stage presence create a captivating performance, winning rave reviews at home and abroad. Corinne has toured extensively throughout the US, Canada, Europe and the U.K., and has been featured on national radio in these regions.

Kelly Joe Phelps has, over the course of eight CDs and fifteen years of touring the world, established himself as a guitarist, singer, and songwriter with singular vision and fearless purpose. His mix of folk,

blues and jazz has won him praise from the likes of Bill Frisell, Steve Earl, and Cameron Crowe. Kelly Joe has been featured on NPR’s ‘All Things Considered’ and ‘Prairie Home Companion’ as well as

numerous BBC and other national radio shows throughout Europe, Australia and Japan. He’s recorded with Townes Van Zandt, Greg Brown, Martin Simpson, Jay Farrar, and a host of others. A brilliant

improviser, Phelps is known for his ability to put a new spin on a song every time he plays, inventive and imaginative enough to be able to take multiple styles of music and merge them with his own artistic

voice, creating a unique sound both original and universal.

Ross Neilsen & the Suffrin’ Bastards

Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street

Friday, August 26

To say that Ross Neilsen is a dedicated, chronic over achiever would be an understatement. Recently, he has been honoured with a nomination for Best New Artist at The Maple Blues Awards, two Rising Star nominations from CBC and back-to-back Blues Album of the Year nominations from the East Coast Music Association. A true road warrior in every sense, Ross Neilsen has spent much of the last two years living out of his van. Two albums in six months, over 200 four-hour shows a year, and a logbook of over 80,000 km covering three national tours.

Whether telling tall tales or capturing the spirit of the blues through his own originals and unique covers in his intimate solo shows or combining clever lyrics with old school, in-your-face guitar playing with his band, he will take you on an emotional journey through the joys and pains of life, death, triumph and defeat … he will touch your heart, soul, body and mind, sending you home to sing yourself to sleep. And in the morning? You will want more, much more.

Roxanne Potvin

Festival Outaouais Émergent, Hull, QC

Thursday, September 1

For fans of Roxanne Potvin, the Juno award nominated Montreal based singer-songwriter, two years might seem like an unbearably long time between albums, but just one spin through the songs on “Play” will be more than enough to convince them that it’s been worth the wait.

From the hook filled punk pop of ‘Dis-moi que tu m’aimes’ – a tongue in cheek song about begging to be loved – to the whimsical nostalgia of ‘Magic Rainbows’ the songs on “Play” are ambitious, but never lose the loose limbed joyful feeling that inspired them. On the funky keyboard driven ‘Pretty Girls’, Potvin snarls her way through one of the most biting songs ever written about our culture’s fascination with beauty. Clearly Roxanne can rock with the best of them when she wants to.

With “Play” Roxanne Potvin has achieved something that few artists ever succeed in doing – she’s expanded her style and grown as an artist while still keeping the grit and authenticity that is so appealing about her music. Hear for yourself: just press “Play”.

50 years of Sticky History –

The Big Brian Downey Bash

Irene's Pub, 885 Bank Street
Saturday, September 3

Howya all doin, friends?!
I'd be just thrilled to have you attend my big anniversary show. I can't believe, it's been 50 years since my first paid gig - thank you very much to the coolest neighborhood bar for hosting my show. We'll have at least four very different sets, because I'd like to show you all the bands who seem to appreciate my sticks, e.g. we're counting on Dean, Mike and Brent from The Mudboys, Maren and Vincent from my Lounge Trio, possibly Peter Newsom from The Lap Band, horns from my big band and whomever else I can dig up from this long trajectory that is my past and present as a professional drummer.
Don't miss out on this one, it will be SO MUCH FUN - and that goes with a BIG THANK YOU to all the people who made this experience make me smile whenever my thoughts travel back!
Love, Brian

50 years – sticky biography of a national treasure
Brian Downey is old school, old soul and rare groove, that he learned on the road, living in Detroit + Chicago of the ‘60s & ‘70s. Brian Downey, born in Schreiber, ON, drummed for the original Drifters, shared the stage with Chuck Berry, who actually pointed at him, having heard him play, demanding: "I want THAT drummer!", Harry Connick Sr., Herb Ellis, Matt Guitar Murphy, John Lee Hooker, Jim Galloway, Charlie Biddle Sr. and played a series of concerts with Chet Baker at The Chateau Laurier in Ottawa in the ‘80s (see photos @ www.briandowney.ca), to name just a few.

As a young man, the story goes, he started drumming in his first band because the only drummer in town took off. But Brian Downey had been listening to blues radio stations from the south ever since he discovered the “on”-switch. Since those 50 years ago, he never stopped learning from the greats and understated in music whom he worships for their musicality, rhythm, integrity and ease on stage to this day.

A seasoned yet evolving performer over decades, his pocket ties bands together from stage to stage. This great, grand drummer makes the good feel better and the lost feel found – audiences all over North-America and musicians from all over the world love him for that.

Richard Thompson

Opening – Del Barber

Bronson Centre, 211 Bronson Avenue

Wednesday, September 7 @ 7 pm; tickets $53.60

Known and celebrated for his extraordinary, genre-bending guitar style and electrifying live performances, Richard Thompson is an established legend in music. With countless albums, numerous awards such as the Ivor Novello Award for songwriting and a lifetime achievement award from BBC Radio and over forty years in music Thompson is still not showing any signs of stopping.

Born in 1949 to a musically diverse family, Thompson grew up listening to everything from jazz to early rock and roll. Artists like Buddy Holly and Les Paul intermingled in his record collection along with other great legends such as Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. It was this early exposure that led to Thompson’s ability to jump between genres in his music.

In 1967 Richard made his debut as a recording artist with the band Fairpoint Convention, which he co-founded. Five albums and three years later, Thompson left Fairpoint Convention and moved on to release his first solo album “Henry the Human Fly” in 1972. Following the release of this album Thompson married folksinger Linda Peters and as the duo Richard & Linda Thompson, worked together until 1983 when they decided to part ways.

His 2010 live album “Dream Attic” was nominated for a 2011 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. A CD/DVD box set titled “Richard Thompson featuring Linda Thompson Live at the BBC” was released in June to critical acclaim and, in January, Thompson was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in honour of his lifetime contribution to music.

Daddy Long Legs

Opening Scotty Doubt

Elmdale House Tavern, 1084 Wellington Street

Saturday, September 17 @ 10 pm; $10

Maple Blues Award and Canadian Independent Music Award winners, Waterloo Ontario's gritty electrified blues band Daddy Long Legs make their first appearance in Ottawa at the Elmdale House Tavern.

For Daddy Long Legs, playing the blues has nothing to do with nostalgia, or trying to recreate their blues record collections. Rather, it’s about mashing together all the brawn of riff-based garage rock, the soul of 60’s era rhythm and blues, and all the jump and shuffle of the west coast and Chicago sounds to create new blues music that is about the here-and-now. As a result, Daddy Long Legs have become an enigma of the music scene, appealing to an eclectic bunch of blues purist, rock-a-billies, and alt-rockers alike.

With their latest release, Daddy Long Legs have created a raucous set of what can only be described as garage blues. “Liars, Cheats andScoundrels” (on Busted Flat Records) has Daddy Long Legs unleashing wild, snarling tones that are barely contained by the CD itself. The album's all original tracks could equally serve as either the soundtrack to a prison riot, or a night of drinking at the local bar after a break-up with your sweetheart. The band garnered rave reviews following their recent appearance at the Kitchener Blues Festival (and sold more CDs than anyone!).

Former Ottawa resident Mike Elliott is the band’s guitarist. Come on out to the Elmdale House and welcome Mike back to Ottawa. Opening band will be Scotty Doubt with an AllStar lineup … Frank Scanga, Billy Brennan and George Prendergast.

Grievous Angel

NAC 4th Stage, 53 Elgin Street

Friday & Saturday, September 23-24 @ 7:30 pm

Tickets http://www.nac-cna.ca/en/whatson/event.cfm?ID=6710

A theatrical concert about the original cosmic cowboy--he lived fast, died young and left a charred corpse. Gram Parsons was the creative force behind some of the most important recordings of the late '60s and early '70s, and today is hailed as the patron saint of alt-country and Americana. He was born into a southern gothic tragedy straight out of Tennessee Williams – his family owned 18,000 acres of Florida orange groves, and they had all the infidelity, addiction, self-destruction and insanity money could buy. His father, ‘Coon Dog’ Connor, committed suicide when Gram was 12 years old. His mother drank herself to death five years later.

Small wonder that Gram had a morbid compulsion to go out in a haze of glory, and on September 19, 1973, in a cheap motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, Gram got his wish as he OD'd on morphine and tequila. He was 26. But in death, his tale took another bizarre turn. Gram's road manager, Phil Kaufman, stole his body from Los Angeles airport, took it to the desert and burned it. A rock legend was born.

Grievous Angel: The Legend of Gram Parsons stars Anders Drerup and Kelly Prescott as Gram and Emmylou Harris. The show was inspired by Michael Bate's March 1973 interview with the doomed singer in Boston. It was Parsons' last recorded conversation. The theatrical concert is produced and directed by Michael Bate, written by Michael Bate with David McDonald.

Maria Muldaur & Her Red Hot Bluesiana Band

CD Release Party

Opening – Canada’s own guitar legend, Rick Fines

Grand Theatre, 218 Princess Street, Kingston ON

Tuesday, September 27

$25 (+$3 city fees and HST) until September 20

$30 (+$3.00 city fees and HST) from September 21 until showtime

The only Canadian date on her fall tour to promote the release of her new CD, Steady Love, an hommage to her beloved New Orleans.

Perhaps best known for her early 1970s Top 40 hit, ‘Midnight At The Oasis’, Maria has been doing what she loves best ever since – singing the blues, gospel, roots and rock, with a voice that will growl at you, seduce you, uplift you and just plain make you feel good.

She’s worked with every name in the pantheon of rock & folk since the Age of Aquarius began back in the ‘60s. On September 27, Maria will bring her five decades of making music to the Grand Theatre, on the day that her new CD is released by Stony Plain Records in Edmonton.

http://www.mariamuldaur.com/

Rick Fines is an award-winning veteran of the folk and blues circuits in North America. His song ‘Riley Wants His Life Back’ won first place in the blues category of 2003 International Songwriting Competition, with B.B. King one of the judges! But he’s been a Canadian institution since the late ‘80s when he played with Peterborough-based blues band, Jackson Delta. A master bottleneck & finger-style guitar hero, Rick has played with everybody from John Lee Hooker to Pinetop Perkins, not to mention his long-standing (and smile-inducing) music magicking with Suzie Vinnick.
