Ottawa Blues This Week - 25 July 2011

******************************************************

SHOUT BROTHER! Choir comes to Ottawa

******************************************************

SHOUT BROTHER! Choir

Information Meeting

Clocktower Brew Pub, 575 Bank Street (just south of the Queensway)

Thursday, July 28 @ 7 pm

Love to sing but can’t read music? Shout Brother! Choir is for you.

Chris White is starting a chapter of Georgette Fry’s men’s community choir in Ottawa. Shout Brother! takes an unorthodox approach to choral singing. Auditions are not required, no one reads music. This choir fills a need for inexperienced singers. Being allowed to sing with a choir for the first time is very powerful and joyful. Experienced singers find the relaxed atmosphere and repertoire of popular music a welcome change.

Reserve your spot by email: choiradmin@georgettefry.ca

Please use Ottawa Brother as the subject line in your email.

Matt Andersen has a larger than life showmanship that has been earning him a fervent and steadfast audience wherever he graces the stage. Matt's sprawling blues, roots and rock musical hybrid with his sorrowing and soulful voice and astonishing guitar-playing has sparked a phenomenal buzz on Canada's East Coast and that grass roots word of mouth cannot be contained any longer!

In the past few years, Matt has released an introductory EP along with two critically-acclaimed live fans' favourites, the full length studio release "Second time around", "Something In-between" which garnered two East Coast Music awards for Matt (Male Solo Artist of the Year and Blues Recording of the Year), "Piggyback" with harmonica virtuoso Mike Stevens and "Live at the Phoenix Theatre". Along with a very busy touring schedule as a headliner at major festivals, clubs and theatres throughout North America and the UK, Matt has also shared the stage and toured with David ‘Honeyboy’ Edwards, America, Randy Bachman, the late Bo Diddley, Little Feat and a host of others.

On Jan 24, 2010 Matt won the 26th edition of the 2010 International Blues Challenge (IBC) in the birthplace of Rock ‘n' Roll and home of the blues, Memphis, TN. Matt was sponsored for this event by the Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival in Fredericton, NB in the solo/duo category. Blues musicians from all over the world including 39 states, 12 countries and 5 continents were chosen by their respected Blues societies to compete in venues on the world-famous Beale Street. Ross Neilsen & the Suffrin’ Bastards

Irene’s Pub, 885 Bank Street

Friday, August 26

To say that Ross Neilsen is a dedicated, chronic over achiever would be an understatement. Recently, he has been honoured with a nomination for Best New Artist at The Maple Blues Awards, two Rising Star nominations from CBC and back-to-back Blues Album of the Year nominations from the East Coast Music Association. A true road warrior in every sense, Ross Neilsen has spent much of the last two years living out of his van. Two albums in six months, over 200 four-hour shows a year, and a logbook of over 80,000 km covering three national tours.

Whether telling tall tales or capturing the spirit of the blues through his own originals and unique covers in his intimate solo shows or combining clever lyrics with old school, in-your-face guitar playing with his band, he will take you on an emotional journey through the joys and pains of life, death, triumph and defeat … he will touch your heart, soul, body and mind, sending you home to sing yourself to sleep. And in the morning? You will want more, much more.

50 years of Sticky History –

The Big Brian Downey Bash

Irene's Pub, 885 Bank Street
Saturday, September 3

Howya all doin, friends?!
I'd be just thrilled to have you attend my big anniversary show. I can't believe, it's been 50 years since my first paid gig - thank you very much to the coolest neighborhood bar for hosting my show. We'll have at least four very different sets, because I'd like to show you all the bands who seem to appreciate my sticks, e.g. we're counting on Dean, Mike and Brent from The Mudboys, Maren and Vincent from my Lounge Trio, possibly Peter Newsom from The Lap Band, horns from my big band and whomever else I can dig up from this long trajectory that is my past and present as a professional drummer.
Don't miss out on this one, it will be SO MUCH FUN - and that goes with a BIG THANK YOU to all the people who made this experience make me smile whenever my thoughts travel back!
Love, Brian

50 years – sticky biography of a national treasure
Brian Downey is old school, old soul and rare groove, that he learned on the road, living in Detroit + Chicago of the ‘60s & ‘70s. Brian Downey, born in Schreiber, ON, drummed for the original Drifters, shared the stage with Chuck Berry, who actually pointed at him, having heard him play, demanding: "I want THAT drummer!", Harry Connick Sr., Herb Ellis, Matt Guitar Murphy, John Lee Hooker, Jim Galloway, Charlie Biddle Sr. and played a series of concerts with Chet Baker at The Chateau Laurier in Ottawa in the ‘80s (see photos @ www.briandowney.ca), to name just a few.

As a young man, the story goes, he started drumming in his first band because the only drummer in town took off. But Brian Downey had been listening to blues radio stations from the south ever since he discovered the “on”-switch. Since those 50 years ago, he never stopped learning from the greats and understated in music whom he worships for their musicality, rhythm, integrity and ease on stage to this day.

A seasoned yet evolving performer over decades, his pocket ties bands together from stage to stage. This great, grand drummer makes the good feel better and the lost feel found – audiences all over North-America and musicians from all over the world love him for that.

John Prine is an artist who can paint the most vivid picture with a few simple words. He seems to literally get under the skin of the characters in his songs, allowing the listener to experience life through someone else's eyes, regardless of their
circumstance John Prine's concert was the closer for the 2010 Edmonton Folk Music Festival.

Lots of blues available in the concerts on demand section of the CBC Website …
