Rev. Ernie Cox
NAC 4th Stage, 53 Elgin Street
Friday, April 8 @ 8 pm; tickets $30
Good news! Ernie's coming back to the NAC 4th Stage for a night of blues & black gospel — and this time he's bringing a new, intimate trio setup with him.
For this one night, Ernie's going to cover piano and vocals, with Don Cummings on B3 organ and Phil Bova on drums. Special guest vocalists will join the trio for the evening, along with the wonderful sax playing of Mike Webster — all the way from NYC. Guest vocalists include Ottawa’s own Andrea Karam and Iyono Ede.
The small, personal vibe of the 4th Stage is perfect for Ernie's new trio format — the soulful grand piano and a big helping of that classic Hammond B3 sound make for a wonderful, one-night-only performance.
Both of Ernie's 4th Stage shows last year sold out almost two weeks early. Don't miss out!

Inside the Music hosted by Tim Bedner presents
Master Guitarist Charlie Hunter with drummer Terence Higgins
Alcorn Music Studios, 903 Carling Ave
Friday, April 22, 5-6:30 pm; tickets - $20
"Charlie’s melodic, groove-oriented style is best described as fluid yet thick, and he's able to coax notes out of his custom, 7-string axe beyond the reach of conventional musicians."
A huge thanks to Tim Bedner! Due to his persistence Charlie Hunter and his drummer Terence Higgins will be stopping by the intimate space at Alcorn Music Studios for a lecture/demo. The duo hosted by Tim Bedner will play music, discuss their background, tell stories, answer questions, all up close and personal.
Master guitarist Charlie Hunter has worked with everyone from Michael Franti, Dave Ellis, Jay Lane, Les Claypool, Norah Jones, Stanton Moore, Skerik, Bobby Previte, Christian McBride, D'Angelo, and John Mayer. He plays rhythm, bass, and lead all on his own, all at the same time using a custom 7 string guitar. Joining Charlie is drummer Terence Higgins from the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Charlie Hunter has a great website with lots of video clips
Terence Higgins, internationally known as the drummer for the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, is as well versed in the churning New Orleans funk style as any man can be. Born and raised in NOLA, Higgins has performed with everyone from Widespread Panic to Dr. John to Norah Jones, and has even gained his own set of peers in other drummers such as Brian Blade, Russell Batiste Jr., and Stanton Moore. Higgins appears on dozens of albums, but with his first solo CD, “In The Bywater”, his own ideas have become a force to be reckoned with.

Fathead
Tucson’s, 2440 Bank Street
Saturday, April 16
That they have been described as a Blues Tour De Force comes as no surprise. Georgia-raised lead singer John Mays has had a storied career that began in the Southern gospel tradition, crossing over into Doo-Wop, R&B and Blues, not to mention a stint with the Godfather Of Soul, James Brown. Hooking up with band leader Al Lerman (harp and saxophone) in Toronto some years later, Fathead’s core has remained constant since 1992, offering ace musicianship, soul stirring harmonies and incendiary live performances. The writing tandem of Lerman and bassist Omar Tunnoch has produced an impressive body of work. Guitar ace Teddy Leonard is back and better than ever, along with iconic drummer Bucky Berger. Elements of funk, soul, and R&B are fused into the group's strong blues backbone, creating a fresh sound that is immediately recognizable as their own.
With two Juno awards to their credit, Fathead is truly an original band with a sound immediately recognizable as their own. They have a ball wherever they play and it shows!

The 13th edition of Virée Blues Boréale
Presents
Harrison Kennedy
Le Petit Chicago, 50 Promenade du Portage, in the Old Hull sector
Wednesday, April 20 @ 8 pm
Harrison Kennedy’s 2nd place finish this year in the Solo/Duo category at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in February came as no surprise to those of us who have been following his blues career over the past few years. National Capital area fans have an opportunity to hear him in April.
Here’s what you’ll hear … his latest CD, “One Dog Barkin’” (on the Electro-fi label) was reviewed in the Winter Ottawa Blues Society newsletter:
“This acoustic CD is all original and the themes are topical –saving the planet, ‘90s trends, economic woes, homelessness – but Harrison has not neglected the tried and true blues themes – bad whiskey, my woman’s got someone new. He also pays homage to Jimmy Reed, Charlie Patton, Huddie (Leadbelly), Mel Brown and that ‘crazy’ is for Snooky Pryor! He offers hope, and a world tour of sorts, in ‘The Healing Power of the Blues’. Backed up on some tracks by Keith ‘Nappy’ Lindsay on keyboards and Justin Dunlop on bass, Harrison plays guitar, harp, mandolin, banjo and percussion, some on the spoons! But it’s his powerful vocals that impress the most. On the final track, ‘I Can Feel You Leaving’, the guitar is so sparse the song is virtually a capella and the lyrics and his vocals are heart-rending.”

Johnny Max
Irene’s, 885 Bank Street
Friday, April 29
FINALLY … it’s certainly been a long road, but now everyone in Ottawa gets a chance to enjoy a Johnny Max Band show!
Johnny is a soulful singer whose respect and passion for all types of music is evident. He is also a brilliant entertainer who has audiences thoroughly enjoying each show. Johnny Max has built up a solid reputation as one of those guys who gives 110% and is one of the most action-packed and satisfying entertainers around. Johnny takes to performing like a fish to water, a perpetual motion machine, galvanizing his spicy blend of Stax/Volt, Atlantic, Funk, and Blues into frenzied heights, often propelling himself into the audience’s eager arms.
To listen to Johnny Max tell it, and to watch Johnny Max present it, you understand very quickly that there’s more to creating great music than simply performing a first-rate piece of music well. It’s much more all encompassing than that.
Max’s take includes engaging the audience, making his show accessible. He wants to more than simply feed off the audience, he looks to make them part of the experience. And he does so with his good natured wit.
Using humour to get your point across is always risky because there’s a fine line between entertaining and being the comic. To his credit Johnny Max knows how to tread that line because the music always comes first.
Max’s music doesn’t always follow conventional Blues lines. Rather than be confined to the traditional 12 bar influenced forms, this veteran of the musical wars favours substance rather than convention.
While his first three releases firmly established Max in the Blues idiom, it was on his fourth, the Juno nominated “A Lesson I’ve Learned” that Johnny added to his Blues sensibilities, and found his groove. And that groove had more to do with Southern Soul than straight up Blues. Of note, check the title track whose chorus might have been lifted from the Dan Penn songbook.
Max’s new disc “It’s A Long Road” picks up where “Lesson” left off – with a wallop! Partnering with a brand new band, Johnny lays down a dozen tracks with a heavy dosage of Gumbo R&B, nods to Rock’em Sock’em Soul, and hints of all-out Boogie work-outs and Tom Waits styled tonalities. Along the way, Johnny relates his most deeply personal stories to date.
You would think that all of the above would be enough to keep anyone busy but Max also finds time to host a radio show: “Sunday Morning Soul” on The HAZE FM, www.thehazefm.ca, Canada’s only commercial web radio station Sunday mornings at 11AM and Wednesdays at 10PM, and co-program the CNE Bandshell BluesFest, (with Rico Ferrara), among other ventures.
It’s all in days work for Max. And he and his fans wouldn’t have it any other way.

“Play” – A little piece of Heaven from Roxanne Potvin
For fans of Roxanne Potvin, the Juno award nominated Montreal based singer-songwriter, two years might seem like an unbearably long time between albums, but just one spin through the songs on “Play” will be more than enough to convince them that it’s been worth the wait.
With “Play” Roxanne Potvin has achieved something that few artists ever succeed in doing – she’s expanded her style and grown as an artist while still keeping the grit and authenticity that is so appealing about her music. Hear for yourself: just press “Play”.

Great Canadian Theatre Company (GCTC), 300–1227 Wellington West
Sunday, April 10, 11 am - 10 pm
Doors @ 11 am; play @ 2 pm; Acoustic Waves concert @ 8 pm
A day-long event called ‘Street Lights’ will include the showing and selling of art-work done by YSB youth. 'Street Food' will also be available.
This event is being held to promote a play called The Middle Place, which runs at the GCTC from March 29 - April 17, and to raise funds for the Youth Services Bureau of Ottawa’s housing program for homeless youth (a program which helps youth permanently move off the streets and into safe and stable housing, go back to school, find a job, and feel hope for a brighter future).
Created from interviews conducted at a youth shelter, The Middle Place brings to the stage the extraordinary voices of 16 homeless teens, three tired caseworkers and one well-intentioned outsider. Lauded by critics, this piece of documentary theatre explores the lives of society's forgotten youth.
A talk back session after the play will be held, with youth who have experienced homelessness.
The day will culminate with an Acoustic Waves concert, presented by the Ottawa Folk Festival and featuring Tara Holloway and her band:

CBC RADIO CONCERTS ON DEMAND

CBC Radio Two @ 7 pm
Friday, April 8
concert 1: The Sheepdogs, recorded at Louis Pub, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon
Dubbed "Saskatoon's Freedom Rockers" by CBC Radio 3 host Grant Lawrence, The Sheepdogs unabashedly take inspiration from the southern rock of the 1970s. With their shaggy locks and scruffy beards these four guys create music that manages to be fresh and contemporary while remaining faithful to its old style roots. And what better motto for a 70s inspired band than "Get It On!"? They most certainly do. With Ewan Currie's powerful lead vocals, tight harmonies from the rest of the band, and great ensemble playing, it's not surprising The Sheepdogs are one of the top 8 bands competing in Rolling Stone magazine's "So You Wanna Be a Rock & Roll Star" contest. Their retro outfits - complete with leather vests and headbands - don't hurt either. This concert was part of 'On a Cold Road', a showcase of some of Saskatoon's best and brightest bands, and a co-presentation between CBC Radio and SaskMusic.
concert 2: Lurrie Bell, recorded at the Halifax Jazz Festival
It may be said that Lurrie Bell grew up with royalty -- blues royalty, that is. The son of Chicago blues harmonica legend Carey Bell, Lurrie was constantly surrounded by the great musicians in that genre. He taught himself to play guitar and began playing along during the frequent rehearsals at home. By the age of 14, he was performing at South Side bars. Bell has a spiritual connection to the blues; knowledgeable and soulful that keeps him connected to his roots while moving the blues forward with time
Lots of blues available in the concerts on demand section of the CBC Website …
