Sweet & the Back Beat

D’Arcy McGee’s, Bells Corners

Friday, June 25 @ 9 pm

Sweet & the Back Beat’s sound is built around the soulful lead vocals of Larry Sweet, whose natural feel for R&B stylists like Wilson Picket, Eddie Floyd, Sam and Dave, and Otis Redding provides audiences a fresh reminder of why this music is so important. Larry is backed by a group of local veteran musicians: Tullio Granata on guitar, Ken Reynolds on drums, Tommy Rowe on bass, and Peter Krogh on keyboards.

It’s Blues and R&B theme night at D’Arcy McGees … classics from the 50s to today.

Jim Suhler & Monkeybeat

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Saturday, June 26 @ 10 pm

Other area shows: Sunday, June 27 @ Bent Anchor, Combermere ON

Monday, June 28 @ Northside Grill, Cobourg ON

Jim Suhler and Monkey Beat have been on the music scene since 1993, and have built a fan base worldwide. They are well known for their no-holds-barred approach to blues-inspired rock ‘n’ roll and roots music. They have shown an amazing depth of songwriting and playing, and their constant touring in both the USA and Europe has garnered many admirers.

Along with Suhler on guitar and lead vocals, the band includes bassist Carlton Powell, keyboardist Shawn Phares and drummer Jimmy Morgan. Together, they've been terrorizing clubs, theaters and festivals alike with their flamethrower brand of blues/rock with a major side order of the Texas border mythology added to keep it spicy.

The band released its latest CD, “Tijuana Bible” last year, which features 16 songs – twelve Suhler originals and notable covers of Elvin Bishop's ‘Drunken Hearted Boy’ and Rory Gallagher's ‘I Could've Had Religion’. Produced by Jim Suhler & Tom Hambridge, guest artists include vocalist Jimmy Hall (Wet Willie, Jeff Beck), Elvin Bishop and Joe Bonamassa.

Coco Montoya

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Wednesday, June 30 @ 9:45 pm

Over the course of his 30-year career, guitarist and vocalist Coco Montoya's explosive guitar playing and soul-driven voice have propelled him to the upper reaches of the blues-rock world. From his early days as a drummer to his current status as one of the top-drawing guitarists and vocalists on the blues-rock scene, Montoya has forged his reputation through years of hard work and constant touring. And it all started with a chance meeting in the mid-1970s with legendary bluesman Albert Collins, who offered Montoya a gig as his drummer. Albert took an immediate liking to Montoya, becoming his mentor and teaching his new protégé secrets of the Collins "icy hot" style of blues guitar. Five years later, John Mayall happened to catch Montoya at a jam session and was blown away. This led to Montoya's touring the world for ten years with the legendary Bluesbreakers. Since stepping out as a bandleader in 1993, Montoya has released four solo albums and has performed non-stop at clubs, concert halls and major festivals all over the world. At every show, fans' jaws dropped, and critics raved about Montoya's mind-bending guitar licks and impassioned vocals.

No stranger to Ottawa blues fans, Coco tours and plays over 200 shows a year. He’ll be at the Rainbow in support of his latest release, “I Want It All Back” on Ruf Records.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Riot

Irene’s, 885 Bank Street

Friday, July 2

Manny Makris and JW-Jones grew up two blocks away from each other and have shared the stage in many different lineups. In fact, Manny taught JW his first few chords and introduced him to a new world of artists.

Their last venture (in 2006) involved Jones playing Baritone guitar in Manny's band while filling in for a bass player on various shows... and a new sound that had never been heard in these parts was born.

Rock 'N' Roll Riot will knock your socks off and make you shake your money maker all night and day!
Satisfaction guaranteed.

Ross Neilson CD Release

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Saturday, July 3 @ 10 pm

To say that Ross Neilsen is a dedicated, chronic over achiever would be an understatement. Recently, he has been honoured with a nomination for Best New Artist at The Maple Blues Awards, two Rising Star nominations from CBC and back-to-back Blues Album of the Year nominations from the East Coast Music Association.

A true road warrior in every sense, Ross Neilsen has spent much of the last two years living out of his van. Two albums in six months, over 200 four-hour shows a year, and a logbook of over 80,000 km covering three national tours.

Ross Neilsen’s latest recording, Redemption, was recorded at the famed Zebra Ranch Studio in Mississippi and it’s the first recording that bears the name of Neilsen’s long-time backing band, The Sufferin’ Bastards, with Shawn Worden on bass and Karl Gans on drums.

Whether telling tall tales or capturing the spirit of the blues through his own originals and unique covers in his intimate solo shows or combining clever lyrics with old school, in-your-face guitar playing with his band, Ross Neilsen will take you on an emotional journey through the joys and pains of life, death, triumph and defeat. Neilsen will touch your heart, soul, body and mind, sending you home to sing yourself to sleep. And in the morning? You will want more, much more.

Hugh Pool

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Thursday, July 29 @ 9:45 pm

Hugh Pool is a free spirit whose life is dictated by his passion for real music. He has never signed a record contract and has never entered into any management deals, but he’s survived 20 years in the New York music scene, playing what he calls “jacked-up Delta blues and Rust Belt roots rock.” Hugh Pool keeps it real. His music reaches deep within, pushing the envelope and shortening the distance between Blind Lemon Jefferson and Z Z Top to a whippoorwill’s whisker, and he makes it his own. He cuts through today’s noise that passes for rock with a dexterity, dimension and depth that puts him in the same game as little appreciated legends like Roy Buchanan or Joe Ely. He’s not so much a blues rocker as he is a blues man who rocks. He brings the largeness of rock to the emotions of blues, but he’s not larger than life. He’s life lived large.
