13th Annual Maple Blues Nominees Announced!

Nominees from across Canada have been announced for the 13th Annual Maple Blues Awards! The Maple Blues Awards is Canada’s national blues awards program. Its goal is to promote blues music across Canada, and to recognize outstanding achievement in the field. Voting is open until Sunday, December 13th at noon (EDT). Blues fans cast their votes online, at www.mapleblues.ca.
Ottawa based swamp boogie, soul R&B and bedroom funk band MonkeyJunk leads the way with six nominations! They received nods in the Entertainer of the Year, Electric Act of the Year, and Recording of the Year, for their record “Tiger In Your Tank”, categories as well as Male Vocalist of the Year and Harmonica Player of the Year for Steve Marriner and Guitar Player of the Year for Tony D.
This year's winners will be announced at the 13th Annual Maple Blues Awards Gala in Toronto, on January 18, 2010 at Koerner Hall. This very special evening is Canada's national annual celebration of homegrown blues talent. It's also a night of great music by the Maple Blues Band, comprised entirely of Maple Blues Awards winners and nominees. Koerner Hall is the newest addition to Toronto’s fine list of cultural centres and theatres. The intimate and elegant hall opened in September 2009 with 1,140 seats and features state-of-the-art acoustic treatment. Danny Marks, Host of BLUZ FM and David Gogo, Cordova Bay Recording Artist, will be hosting the Maple Blues Awards.

CKCU-FM is a remarkable and unique institution; starting thirty-four years ago as a campus radio station, it saw and accepted the challenge of the needs of the diverse communities who live in Canada's National Capital Region, and today, as a campus/community station, it broadcasts in over twenty languages. I also believe that our quality of programming in blues, classical, country, dance, jazz and world music is unsurpassed by any other Canadian radio station.
We are listener-supported radio; this means we receive no subsidies whatsoever from any level of government and can only survive because of your contributions and our volunteers' dedication.
I am writing to ask if you would consider sponsoring one hour of alternative/community radio at CKCU-FM 93.1 in Ottawa. CKCU provides at least six unique and valuable services to the community:
1) We present a whole range of alternative music that you'll never find on commercial radio, presented by people with passion and authority. Our jazz, blues, dance, world, country and classical music programs cover the whole history of these musics, are presented by acknowledged experts in each area, and reject the superficial fashion-conscious “Top 40” approach you’ll hear on the region’s commercial stations.
2) We provide a voice and a community billboard for many of the communities that make up our population; we have regular Aboriginal, Asian, Caribbean, Chinese, Christian, Filipino, Gospel, Haitian, Indian, Jamaican, Jewish, Latin American, Muslim, Persian, Scottish, Spanish, Somali, and Vietnamese programming – to name a few!
3) We give an independent and diverse point of view on political and community affairs. We are not owned by a large profit-oriented corporation or a government, and our volunteers and our Board reflect the diverse opinions and viewpoints of the communities they come from.
4) We bring you the renowned BBC World news four times every weekday, respected internationally for its independence and broad coverage.
5) We support local musicians by publicizing their gigs and airing their CDs. You don’t have to be a big name to get heard on CKCU.
6) We keep you informed of upcoming jazz and blues concerts that you might otherwise miss, by mentioning them on our programs and in e-mailouts.
As a former Treasurer and Chairman of the Board, I can assure you that CKCU has a bare-bones budget. Because most of us are volunteers, we are able to bring you world-class radio at a cost of a little over $40.00 per hour! We have three revenue sources:

Inspired by blues legends like T-Bone Walker, Charlie Patton and Big Joe Turner, Duke Robillard's guitar work has seamlessly spanned the worlds of jazz, blues, and swing since he founded the renowned big band, Roomful of Blues, in 1967.
Since 1980, Duke has recorded 20 acclaimed solo albums and toured the world both with his own band and also as Jimmie Vaughan's replacement in The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Most recently Duke played guitar and toured with music legend Tom Waits. Called "one of the great players" by the legendary B.B. King, Duke's upbeat live performance, accented by a swinging horn section, is a tasteful display of a wide variety of blues styles.
The Blues Music Awards (formerly W.C.Handy Awards) have named Duke Robillard "Best Blues Guitarist" four years out of five (2000, 2001, 2003, 2004) making him the second most honoured guitarist for that award! He was also nominated in that category in 2005, 2007 and again this year of 2008. In 2007 Duke received a Grammy nomination for his "Guitar Groove-a-rama" CD.
Other awards over the last decade include three Canadian Maple Blues Awards in 2001, 2002, and 2003 for "Best International Blues Artist," The Blues Foundation's "Producer of the Year" award in 2004, The French Blues Association "Album of the Year" award in 2002 (”Living with the Blues”) and "Guitarist of the Year" awards in 1999 and 2002.
As a solo artist, he has released eleven CDs on the Stony Plain label, plus one with label mate Ronnie Earl and one with The New Guitar Summit. Duke's latest CD "Stomp the Blues Tonight” (on Stony Plain) adds horns and digs deep into the riotous, raunchy, rockin' '40s and '50s R&B that helped launch rock and roll.

The return of Drew's original bass player and arranger, Kurt Walther has provided an extra spark. Kurt recently has recovered from a severed tendon in his hand as well as a bad case of being a financial advisor. The band is pumped and ready for action.

The 2nd Clarence-Rockland RnB Fest will be held from November 5-8. The festival started last year with only one night of Rhythm N Blues music and the event was a success. This year continues the blues festival committee's mandate to assist local youth. Net profits from the festival will help support programs to encourage youth in the arts, support local performing arts and also this year le Centre de santé communautaire de l'Estrie and the Roberts/Smart Centre will receive a share of the net proceeds to support their youth counselling and mental health programs in the Clarence-Rockland area.
Headlining this year's festival on Saturday, November 7, is Ricky Paquette. In addition to his regular evening concert during the festival, Ricky also headlines an afternoon youth concert and joining him will be the winner of a Bandarama competition this coming October for local youth bands and singer/performers. The singer/songwriter awards will take place on Sunday, November 8 as part of the festival. The festival's lineup also includes Jake Thomas, The Coggs, Silver Creek, Lydie, Jérémie Séguin, Willis Pride and Monday Rebel.

Sharing a van and a band, Toronto based Dave Borins & Jadea Kelly have teamed up for a two week tour to the east coast. ‘East Side Ride 09’ will travel through Kingston, Ottawa, Montreal, Fredericton, Moncton, Sackville, Hampton and Halifax – lined with a plethora of house concerts, taverns and cafés.
Both Dave and Jadea have been awarded Toronto Independent Music Awards, Jadea taking ‘Best Country’ and Dave nominated for ‘Best Live Acoustic Performer’ and ‘Best Folk Artist’ of 2008.
Jadea is to release her highly anticipated second album “Eastbound Platform”, with producer David Baxter in January ‘09. This disc includes songs featured/co-written by Justin Rutledge, David Baxter and Lori Yates. The maturity of her vocals borders on the harder, and much more passionate, mixes of Loretta Lynn’s ‘Feelings’ and Neko Case’s rockin ‘Kansas City’. Dave Borins is quite possibly one of Toronto’s most energetic acoustic soul players and performers. This may be attributed to the following successes: a sold out show at the prestigious Hugh's Room, an independently-booked cross Canada tour, sold-out shows in New York City, and house concert bookings throughout Southern Ontario. Like many of his peers, Borins works hard to construct a life based purely on performing music. When he’s off the road he works as a backcountry guide – trekking all over the world from Himalayan Mountains to Ancient Incan trails, lugging his guitar from place to place. From this you begin to understand where he draws his inspiration from. Some of his title tracks, like ‘Oh River’ or ‘Poison Tree’, borrow on much of Canada's old-fashioned, roots-based music, but it is Borins who applies an engaging lyrical intensity. Ricky Paquette has been playing guitar for half of his life. His style combines his love of blues with classic rock, though he has studied classical guitar as well. In September Ricky was in Afghanistan with Bruce Cockburn and Finger Eleven, entertaining the Canadian Forces men & women posted there. She has scored a total of 20 #1 singles on the Billboard R&B Singles Chart and 45 ‘Top 40’ hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. ‘Respect’ was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1967. In 1987, Aretha Franklin became the first female artist to be entered into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

It’s hard to believe that 40 years have flown by since Donnie ‘Mr. Downchild’ Walsh and his late brother, Hock formed the renowned group that would be the inspiration behind the blues in Canada and, in particular, the world famous Blues Brothers. Downchild Blues Band is celebrating this very special anniversary with an amazing group of very special friends including movie icon Dan Aykroyd AKA Elwood Blues, Colin Linden, James Cotton, Wayne Jackson of the Memphis Horns, Local Guitar Virtuoso, Ricky Paquette, and more surprise guests to be announced.
The Downchild Blues Band is a Canadian blues institution with an international reputation. They have been rewarded with an array of awards from both the media and the music industry, including a 1991 Juno Award for Best Roots and Traditional Album and ‘Entertainers of The Year’ at the 2007 Maple Blues Awards. A constant throughout, Donnie ‘Mr. Downchild’ Walsh, the leader and founding member of the band, has kept the music alive and relevant in the world of blues today. Downchild band members include some of the most well respected musicians in the country, who have performed together for over 15 years. This includes silky smooth singer and harmonica player Chuck Jackson, tenor sax player Pat Carey, Mike Fitzpatrick on drums, rhythm captain Gary Kendall on bass, and former American super-group rocker Michael Fonfara (of Rhinoceros fame) on keyboards.
Downchild has always been a band with loyal fans and in 1970 Dan Aykroyd was one of their biggest supporters, recording two Downchild songs, ‘I Got Everything I Need (Almost)’ and ‘Shotgun Blues’ for the multi-platinum selling Blues Brothers album "Briefcase Full of Blues". Dan Aykroyd will be appearing with Downchild for three extraordinary performances in Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto.
Grammy nominee, Colin Linden has played on and produced hundreds of albums for such luminaries as Lucinda Williams, Colin James, Bruce Cockburn and David Wilcox to name a few. Linden is touring in support of his new album entitled "From The Water" on True North Records/Universal. Special guests for Toronto and Ottawa include James Cotton and Wayne Jackson. James Cotton is a legendary blues harmonica player who grew up in the South playing with Muddy Waters and is now celebrating 65 years in the entertainment business! The one and only Wayne Jackson of the Memphis Horns, has played on 52 Number One records and over 80 Gold and Platinum records and toured the world and recorded with such stars as Elvis, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Al Green, Neil Young, U2 and Peter Gabriel.
Downchild are currently recording their 40th Anniversary album “I Need A Hat” with some very special guests.
