The Century Blues Tour

With Doc MacLean and Big Dave McLean

Rainbow, 76 Murray Street

Thursday, September 10

Doc MacLean and Big Dave McLean are pleased to report that their National Steel “Century” Blues Tour has grown to a record breaking 100+ back to back shows spanning 9 provinces and 2 territories.

Riding high on the roots revival, the veteran bluesmen make their second stop on this epic tour in Ottawa at the Rainbow on Thursday, September 10.

The most comprehensive Canadian blues-roots tour ever mounted, and operating without arts funding, the Tour is absorbing the costs of bringing the blues to remote rural locations and the far north. Building on the “blues coming to your town!” theme, MacLean and McLean have partnered with music retailer and educator Long and McQuade to offer complimentary, blues guitar workshops and masterclasses at locations across Canada.

To commemorate the Tour, MacLean and McLean are releasing a special, live CD, “Big Road Blues.” The limited pressing, recorded and produced by Catherine McLelland for CBC’s ‘Canada Live’, will only be

available at Century Blues Tour shows.

Back by popular demand, don’t miss this opportunity to hear them interact again, up close and personal in this epic, all acoustic songs and stories presentation. Loaded with new songs and old favourites, the Century Tour promises to be a classic, "must see" event.

The Century Blues Tour. A Cool One Hundred. The lines of the horizon and the smell of barbecue. Broken strings, broken hearts, broken glass. Laughter and tears. Late nights and Cadillacs. Two of Canada’s best loved bluesmen playing vintage National Steel guitars, sharing songs and stories from Coast to Coast to Coast.

Follow the Century Tour: http://centurybluestour.blogspot.com

Big Dave McLean is a Juno winning, Stony Plain recording artist: http://www.stonyplainrecords.com based in Winnipeg. His new acoustic release “Got ‘em from the bottom” is 2009 WCMA nominated "Blues

Recording of the Year," and was Juno nominated "Blues Album of the Year." Big Dave was Maple Blues Nominated "Acoustic Artist of the Year" for the second year in a row, and this time was also nominated

for "Entertainer of the Year." Last year he won the "Lifetime Achievement Award." It's gonna be a Big year for Big Dave as the album and regional nominations keep rolling in. See why he's being called the next "Prime Minister of the Blues."

Doc MacLean was recognized as "Acoustic Blues Master" at last year's Black American Music Awards. He's got a bunch of new songs you won't want to miss. "An audio version of the movie, Sin City," said Blues Revue. "The Master of Darkness." His coast to coast fanbase will make the Century Tour a great success and a wild adventure. Doc now hangs his hats in Toronto.

Baker Street Café, 385 Richmond Road

Friday & Saturday, September 25 & 26; 9:30 pm – 12:30 am

“Coffee House Blues” kicks off at Baker Street Café. John Merriam’s idea is to offer a venue where people can enjoy really good Blues in an atmosphere of "just that" … people wanting to hear some good Blues. Baker Street Café is not licenses … they will be serving a very limited menu with specialty coffees and desserts. John’s roots go back to the Le Hibou days in Ottawa ... and he hopes Baker Street Café will follow the tradition of what was so great so many years ago.

Thursday, October 1 @ 8 pm; tickets $26.50

Fundraiser for Emilie Stanley

Regent Theatre, Picton ON

Friday, October 2 @ 8 pm; tickets $26.50

First Annual One Day Blues Revue

Victoria Concert Hall, Coburg ON

Saturday, October 3; tickets $39.95

October brings a great Blues Double Header from Chicago to Eastern Ontario … guitar virtuoso Melvin Taylor with journeyman Blues guitarist Studebaker John.

Melvin Taylor is one of the most talented guitarists the planet has produced … an original virtuoso who constantly pushes his own limits. While people in Europe have been aware of Melvin’s talents for years, North America is just starting to catch on. When Melvin plays, jaws hang open as people watch him play the electric guitar in a way no one has ever imagined.

Studebaker John has played and recorded with the Yardbirds as well as the Pretty Things. The Chicago tribune says “His harmonica work recalls past masters like Little Walter and Big Walter Horton while his slide guitar is descended from Elmore James and Hound Dog Taylor (with whom he was friends). On top of that, John is a powerhouse singer and a talented songwriter.”

Backing the two sets is journeyman drummer Kenny Coleman, who has played with everyone in Chicago as well as doing work for legends like Johnny Mathis and Grammy Award winners the Clark Sisters, Koko Taylor and more.

On bass, the master Felton Crews who spent a few years playing with jazz icon Miles Davis! In the Blues world, Felton has played with everyone from Otis Rush to Bonnie Raitt, including a few years with Charlie Musselwhite.

This is a stellar line-up that is going to thrill Blues and music lovers to the soul. Each guitarist will do his own set and then jam they will together at the end.

The First Annual One Day Blues Revue in Cobourg will feature Canadian blues during the afternoon (2-5:45 pm) with the Double Bill at night starting at 8:15 pm until midnight.

Dave Mowat, Blues Harmonica great spent 9 years out west making his living playing Blues, playing with Canadian Blues great Big Dave McLean and Ben Sures. Dave was also featured on a CBC-produced showcase called Wang Dang Doodle in Winnipeg. His performance is exceptional; his sound on harp is a nod to classic players like Little Walter and Walter Horton, while his strong vocals are more like Howlin' Wolf.

The Fabulous Tonemasters are aptly named; they pay attention to their sound. These guys have been playing Blues for years and guitarist Gerry spent a number of years playing with Marty and the Mojos.

Rick Fines is a veteran of the folk and blues circuits in North America. In October 2005 Rick he took first place in the Sweetgum Bottom Acoustic Blues Competition. His song ‘Riley Wants His Life Back’ won first place in the blues category of 2003 International Songwriting Competition, with B.B. King one of the judges! He has won MapleBlues Awards for Songwriter of the Year and Acoustic Act Of The Year twice and has received eight additional nominations. His work with Jackson Delta (for 15 years) brought nominations for both Juno and Handy Awards.

Tickets available at the venues, at Zap Records in Cobourg and through www.zapp-productions.com

The Special Music Issue and free CD from Southern Cultures is a great deal containing a wealth of information. I'm going to get mine now in case they run into a shortage later on. Thanks for the informative update.
