Good news from Bruce @ the Bytowne ... Sony has imported a print of "Cadillac Records" (www.cadillacrecordsmovie.com) into Canada; the Bytowne has scheduled screenings for March 6-10. There are ticket giveaways on five CKCU-FM radio shows, including Black & Blues and In A Mellow Tone (see Blues on the Radio above for schedules) and the giveaways include the CD soundtrack!
The Sony Pictures film "Cadillac Records" follows the rise and fall of Chess Records, which launched the careers of such greats as Muddy Waters, Etta James and Chuck Berry. Leonard Chess, who co-founded the label with his brother Phil, was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, however Cadillac Records omits Phil from its story, so this movie may not be for you if historical inaccuracy bothers you (but when have movies ever been historically accurate!) Baobab Youth Performers in Concert

The vibrant and talented young people of Baobab Tree will be presenting a performance of Ghanaian rhythms and dance on March 7 at the Orleans Theatre. They will welcome special guests Prosper Adjetey & Dominic Donkor, both former performers with the Ghana National Dance Ensemble.
Baobab Youth Performers range in age from 12-18, and are directed by Kathy Armstrong. They have performed numerous concerts in the Ottawa area as well as traveling to Banff, the USA and Ghana, West Africa.
As well, students from the Ghanaian Language and Culture Association will perform a dance with the youth and guest artists. The GLCA offers Saturday classes to children of Ghanaian heritage to study traditional languages, and Baobab Tree has teamed up with them to help facilitate culture workshops. This partnership will surely result in an energetic and exciting performance at Drum Beat East!

5th Annual End of Winter Blues Festival

The Loyal Blues Fellowship will be hosting the 5th Annual End of Winter Blues Festival on Saturday, March 7. This year’s theme is the “Axe-men of Canadian Blues” and will feature acts from all across Canada, including many from right here in the Quinte area.
“The End of Winter Blues Festival is an afternoon and evening full of great music, great food and plenty of dancing,” says Ron Foxall, President of the Blues Fellowship.
Doors will open at noon with the afternoon showcasing performances by local artists. Crissy’s Soul Food Diner will be open all day and a full meal deal is available at a cost of $15 per person. Evening performances feature Tim Vaughan and JW-Jones, with Bill Durst (formerly of Thundermug) headlining.

The Loyal Blues Fellowship is a non-profit community group. It is their goal to raise awareness of the impact that the blues has had on the Musical Heritage of North America. Tim Mavety was a musician, music teacher and a well-loved friend who touched the lives of many in his home town of Kingston. Epilepsy was only too real to him and contributed to his early passing. His many musician friends, Epilepsy Kingston and Brandees together have organized a day of music with the best of Kingston’s bands. Admission is only $5.00 and there are great prizes and 50/50 draws. All money raised at this event goes directly to support Epilepsy Kingston activities in Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington. Epilepsy Kingston is a non-profit organization that provides support for individuals and families, training and education in schools, communities & workplaces and non-medical services required by individuals with or affected by epilepsy.

The Stellar Cast Blues Jam is a bonafide grass roots event that has grown out of the very floorboards of Irene’s Pub and has become a real crowd pleaser for musicians and music lovers alike. The Stellar Cast features Mike Ktenas (bass) and Corky Kealey (drums) as the foundation, and is filled out by a host of great local players who rotate according to availability. Each week the cast is topped up with a guest host who steers the song selections in whatever way they're inspired and the jamming begins. It's a great concept and the proof is in the popularity the night has garnered over the years.

There’s humour in Max Cann’s live presentations, as well as thoughtfulness, and sentiment (not much sentimentality, though). Most of all, there’s variety and Cann is proof that if you’re still doing music after 35 years, you’re certain to be very good at it.
Those of you who attended the Max Cann gig at Blueberry Hill will remember what an enjoyable evening it was. Max was visiting here last year from Torquay, England and decided to record at Terry Gillespie’s Heaven’s Radio Studio in Vankleek Hill, returning later in the year to introduce the public to his new CD “Opener”. Well, MAX IS BACK! Terry will be accompanying Max on guitar.

A little something for the body, a little something for the mind: your soundtrack to a joyful revolution. Mr. Something Something represents four years of composing, performing, risk-taking, improving and ultimately mobilizing the original vision of founding members Larry Graves [drums/percussion] and John MacLean [saxophone/voice]. Twenty years of playing, studying and traveling passed before these two childhood friends settled on the unbeatable dance rhythms of Nigeria, Senegal, Mali and Ghana as the most natural gathering place for the elements that would ultimately make up the Mr. Something Something sound.
Western instruments and concepts of improvisation are explored and layered over what used to be called Afrobeat; but the term strains to contain the innovations happening in the rhythm section at every show. It also fails to express in fiery-enough terms the imaginative solo work of respected jazz guitarist Paul MacDougall. Liam Smith dependably delivers basslines designed to induce and sustain a state of ecstatic dancing. And there is always inspiration to be drawn from mesmerizing on-stage dancer/choreographer Jennifer Dallas. The horn section strikes with power and uplifts with melody. And above it all, acting as a lightning rod, is the lyric statement of the case for change and consciousness, passionately delivered by electrifying frontman Johan Hultqvist.
Aside from wildly energized and unpredictable live shows, the band is becoming increasingly well-known for its green politics and environmental activism. The group did a number of “eco-dates” in 2007, playing a wind-powered show and performing in such unconventional venues as organic farms and food co-ops to highlight communities that are trying to minimize their ecological footprints.
The fresh sound and powerful message of the band’s second album “The Edge” led to a nomination for a 2007 Juno Award for World Music Album of the Year. Over the last three years the band has toured relentlessly in Canada, playing more than 300 shows, including appearances at most major jazz festivals and many folk festivals from coast to coast.
