Dear Jazz Fan,
CKCU-FM is a remarkable and
unique institution; starting thirty-seven years ago as a campus radio station,
it saw and accepted the challenge of the needs of the diverse communities who
live in Canada's National Capital Region, and today, as a campus/community
station, it broadcasts not only in English but in fourteen other languages
spoken in the region. I also believe that our quality of programming in blues,
classical, country, dance, jazz and world music is unsurpassed by any other
Canadian radio station.
We are listener-supported
radio; this means we receive no subsidies whatsoever from any level of
government [federal, provincial or municipal] and can only survive because of
your contributions and our volunteers' dedication.
I am writing to ask if you
would consider sponsoring one hour of alternative/community radio at CKCU-FM
93.1 in Ottawa. CKCU provides at least six unique and valuable services to the
community:
We present a whole range of
alternative music that you'll never find on commercial radio, presented by
people with passion and authority. Our jazz, blues, dance, world, country and
classical music programs cover the whole history of these musics, are presented
by acknowledged experts in each area, and reject the superficial
fashion-conscious “Top 40” approach you’ll hear on the region’s commercial
stations.
We provide a voice and a
community billboard for many of the communities that make up our population; we
have regular Cree, Creole, Farsi, French, German, Hindi, Inuktitut, Mandarin,
Pashto, Serbian, Spanish, Tagalog, Urdu & Vietnamese programming.
We give an independent and
diverse point of view on political and community affairs. We are not owned by a
large profit-oriented corporation or a government, and our volunteers and our
Board reflect the diverse opinions and viewpoints of the communities they come
from.
We bring you the renowned BBC
World news four times every weekday, respected internationally for its
independence and broad coverage.
We support local musicians by
publicizing their gigs and airing their CDs. You don’t have to be a big name to
get heard on CKCU.
We keep you informed of
upcoming jazz and blues concerts that you might otherwise miss, by mentioning
them on our programs and playing upcoming artists.
As a former Treasurer and
Chairman of the Board, I can assure you that CKCU has a bare-bones budget.
Because most of us are volunteers, we are able to bring you world-class radio
at a cost of a little over $50.00 per hour!

particular programs
The community of listeners and musicians

A soul singer respectful for and with a passion for
each and every style of music, Johnny Max is unquestionably one of those
dazzling showmen who fill his audience with admiration at each of his
shows, because of his full fledged performances. Totally in his
element when on stage, this perpetual motion machine propels a spicy mix
of Stax/Volt, Atlantic, Funk and Blues to extreme heights to the delight
of his eager audience. Using humour to get your point across is always
risky because the line between entertaining and being the comic is very
thin. Many have learned this to their expense! But Johnny Max is
past master in the field, always with his music upfront. To give access to the
most people possible, he is not satisfied with feeding the public his music; he
carries his audiences into the experience. He does not at all limit
himself to the Blues 12-bar conventional structure, but instead favours
substance over convention. Looking at him and listening to his music soon leads
to figuring out that he is not at all satisfied with simply creating and
performing a first-rate piece of music well. Indeed, a Johnny Max Band’s
performance means a thorough all-encompassing experience.

Blues giant Nick Curran (age 35) to Cancer and now it has come to our attention
that another blues great, Kid Ramos, has recently been diagnosed with the
disease. Cancer treatment in the U.S. is not cheap and we would like to show
Kid our appreciation for his influence and talent. A benefit will be held for
Kid Ramos at Irene's, Monday November 12. Many of Ottawa’s best blues players
will be out sharing the stage trying to raise money for this great cause. FREE
ADMISSION!

Blackie and The Rodeo Kings has organically evolved into
one of the finest roots-oriented bands in North America, having released six
CDs and evolved a feeling of brotherhood manifested in a sense of groove,

energizing and constantly evocative. Blackie and the Rodeo Kings remain
one of Canada’s greatest musical treasures.
The Kings & Queens concert pairs the band with some of their favourite female singers and friends. The idea for Kings & Queens was hatched in a rental van at the end of a Rodeo Kings tour. Three Times Lucky, formed in 2009, are a group of
experienced Ottawa area musicians who play original blues-based rock music,

Whittaker (Tampa Red), Jimmy Reed and Delbert McClinton, although they are not

we first started playing so many years ago, we were all enamoured with the idea
of being musicians – being in a band. Although we couldn't have known then how
far it would go or where we would end up, I'm not sure any of us understood
what it is to be a musician as we do now. Music brings us great joy and we've
realized over the years that it does so for all of us. It brings us together and
dispels the illusion of differences, leaving behind only commonality and unity.
It heals, it inspires. It instills hope and faith. It can & has lead many
of us through the darkest of times and delivered us up to the light. These
realizations have come to mean more than anything to us. We've come to realize
that our legacy is not just how many songs or records we leave behind, but how
many smiles as well. We've come to realize that our part is only a small one in
a much bigger picture. We've come to realize that making someone happy even if
just for a short time makes life better for all of us. We've come to realize
that we do what we do because we love life, and we love music. And because

all!
He was eleven years old when
he met blues legend Howlin' Wolf
from Chicago. The massive fellow took lovingly care of the kid and told him to
listen to the music of Charlie Patton
and Son House, if he wanted to
play the blues himself. Many years later, in 1999, the Linden-produced
“Tribute To Howlin' Wolf“ album was nominated for a Grammy award. On his new
CrossCut album, “Still Live“ Colin dedicates a song to the man who had an
important effect on him.
Colin
Linden is a larger-than-life blues
and roots personality, particularly in Canada. A couple of years ago, the
Toronto-born artist moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where he's feeling on top of
the world because he can hear great roots music at every street corner.
Along with Joe Henry and T-Bone Burnett, Colin
Linden must be regarded one of today's prominent roots and blues
producers. Colin has produced round about 100 albums, projects for The Band, Colin James, Janiva Magness, Bruce
Cockburn and others. Most of all,
he's an accomplished, stylish slide guitar virtuoso, playing on more than three
hundred releases. He played some of the music in the Coen Brothers film 'O
Brother, Where Art Thou'.
He's a musician's musician,
performing in a class of his own, often compared with contemporaries like Ry Cooder or David Lindley. Colin is a talented songwriter and a first-rate
slide guitar player with a deep, mellow tone. His picking technique is
exceptional and sophisticated with unexpected twists and tunings and considered
one of the finest slide guitar players, worldwide!

David Gogo is one of Canada's hardest working blues-rock
guitarists, and he has a string of remarkable accomplishments to show for it.
Gogo has garnered three Juno Nominations, the Saturday Night Blues' Great

Musician of the Year, and has twice been named Maple Blues Guitarist of the

September picked up the Western Canadian Music Award for Blues Album of the
Year.
Soul Bender features outstanding new tracks; some Gogo
originals and a few covers that run the gamut of sources and styles (Procol
Harum, Elmore James, The Doors, Michael Jackson) but infused with a Gogo
twist. The album was recorded by Rick
Salt at Lois Lane Studios, where five of Gogo's previous albums have been
recorded. Every effort was made to
capture the feel of Gogo's incredible live shows, and the result showcases
Gogo's best guitar and vocal performances ever!
Soul Bender is a sizzling, hard-rocking blues album that is filled with
heavy grooves, grit and emotion.
Gogo continues to tour relentlessly, bringing his
cutthroat wit and virtuosic blues guitar playing to festivals and headline

house-party band, catl went on to win the 2009 Toronto Blues Society Talent
Search, paving the way for them to play other festivals such as the South Side

the Montreal International Jazz Festival in 2011.

well as Chicago and Delta style Blues, Antone brings his experience to the
studio to produce his latest CD “Red Road Blues”, inspired by his Cultural
Heritage and his life experiences. Guitarist Richard Joyce from Toronto,
Ontario puts down a strong rhythm and superior quality tone, adding to the
Blues Machine’s amazing sound. The Blues Machine’s strong rhythm section
consists of Juno Award winning drummer and Trinidad native, Hayden Vialva, a
long time friend and ally of Antone’s and Rob Valente from London ON, whose
impressive bass playing rounds off the smooth and soulful music of Robbie

There are bands for which rock and roll is a
lifestyle, and then there are bands for which it is life. At an age when most boys are still dreaming
of rock stardom, the Weber Brothers were too busy working to care. Four sets a
night, four nights a week, the brothers perfected their hard-won sound in
Maryland dive bars they were often too young to frequent. Inspired by their
intense love of Scorcese’s classic concert film “The Last Waltz,” Ryan and Sam
sent off a self-recorded demo tape to the legendary Ronnie Hawkins, the elder
statesman of rock whose former protégés (Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, et al.)
went on to reshape the music history as The Band. Duly impressed by the pair's
immense raw talent, Hawkins promptly invited them to audition for his storied
backing band, The Hawks.
One quick decision and one long van ride later,
they arrived at Hawkins’ rural Ontario home, and after surviving the intense
musical apprenticeship of his fabled “Rock ‘n’ Roll Bootcamp,” they were in:
full-blooded Hawks. Ten years and six self-released albums later, the Webers
have spread their wings, shared the stage with icons like Garth Hudson, Levon
Helm, Leon Russell, Derek Trucks and Kris Kristofferson, and toured extensively
throughout the US, Canada, and Europe.

BLUES ON THE RIDEAU

Celebrating its 8th year BOTR has become one
of the premier Blues Series in the country. The combination of a delicious
buffet dinner and dancing to some of Canada’s best blues bands in the friendly,
intimate setting of The Cove has proven to be a real winner. Proceeds from
every show go to support different local charities. $38,000 has been raised
since the Series started and another $7,000 is expected this year.
It’s another great Line-Up for 2012/13 – a combination of
the most popular acts who’ve played the Series previously and some exciting new
talent. The 2012/13 Season starts October 26 and will continue once a
month until May (excluding December). There will be a total of 11 shows this
year – two-night stands (Friday & Saturday) and singles (Friday only).
Most occur on the third weekend of the month. Times are the same for all shows
– 7 to 11 pm. Despite increased costs the ticket price will remain the same as
last year - $60 which includes a full course buffet dinner, dancing and a
donation to the charity.

Guitarist and singer/songwriter Derek Miller is a
journeyman musician with eclectic taste and a knack for roots-inflected
rock. Born on the Six Nations of the
Grand River, Mohawk Territory, in Canada, Miller became interested in music in
his early teens and by the late ‘90s had not only toured with iconic Canadian
vocalist Buffy Sainte-Marie, but also garnered Juno Awards for both his debut
album, “Music Is The Medicine” and his sophomore album, “The Dirty Looks”, in
2008.
Derek’s latest album, “Derek Miller with Double Trouble”
takes us to the heart of Native Americana romanticism. It uses vintage tones and aesthetics of ‘50s
rock ‘n’ roll with a modern twist, telling the story of a mythical man who has
a blind moment of insanity and the events that got him to that point. The development in his newest recordings
describes, in a metaphoric way, the trials and tribulations of the artist.
Derek Miller is a dynamic performer; whether you catch

This concert was a classic arena rock show. The Winnipeg crowd was more than ready to roll on down the highway for a set that combined classic BTO hits, with new songs cut from the same cloth. Randy Bachman is one of the founding fathers of world class rock & roll in Canada. His work with The Guess Who helped establish the Canadian music scene at a time when the music industry was dominated by the United States and Britain. In 1971, Bachman was looking for a new singer for his band Brave Belt and former Winnipegger Neil Young suggested he call Fred (CF) Turner. It was this group that eventually became BTO or Bachman Turner Overdrive. In 1977, Bachman left after a string of monumental hits including "Takin' Care of Business" and "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet." Fast forward many years to when Bachman was working on a new solo album in 2009. He invited the recently retired Turner to add some vocals. Bachman was so inspired with the results he put aside his solo project and invited Turner to pool his new songs with his. The result? Bachman Turner! When they revealed the music of the new band for the first time, it was almost as if BTO had taken a six month holiday in 1977 and then gone back into the studio. This hometown concert was recorded at the MTS Centre in front of an adoring and exuberant crowd. The song "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" features a guest appearance by a young guitarist named Kyle, who won a local radio contest to appear with Bachman & Turner and nailed the solo.
